“I have a call to make.” I walk out the door, leaving her to get dressed. She can’t deny me. I will be going with her and meeting her family. When I’m far enough away that Sophia can’t hear me, I look for Marcos’s number and dial, and he answers on the first ring.

“Maxim, what a surprise!” I’m not in the mood for pleasantries.

“When can I expect Elena?” I say in a dry tone.

“Whenever you come and get her. She’s not my problem anymore.” He hangs up. Prick. He probably took her phone away. I have to go and get her. Andrei can’t leave the dealership today; I’m expecting a shipment. This will not ruin my plans. I will be joining Sophia and her family. This is perfect; it will let her guard down. She can go, and I’ll meet her there. Let her think she won.

Walking back to her, I hear her on the phone. Who the fuck is she talking to?

Creeping in, I hear her say, “Si, mama.” Relief washes over me as I realize she’s talking to her mother. She looks at me as she hangs up the phone.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, but I have to leave you. Something came up.”

“What came up?”

“Nothing that concerns you.” I step toward her to give her a goodbye kiss, but she steps back.

“Seriously? Nothing that should concern me? For someone who has it in his head that we’re in some sort of relationship, you sure don’t know how relationships work.”

Fuck.I hate that she’s right. Why am I doing this to myself? I can have any mafia princess of my choosing. Walk away, Maxim. You already fucked her. You scratched that itch. Let her be someone else’s fucking problem.

Just the thought of her being with someone else makes the monster inside of me want to crawl its way out. She’ll never be with anything else but me. I don’t want a princess; I want the fucking queen standing in front of me.

I speak before I change my mind.

“Elena is supposed to be moving in with Andrei today, but he was worried because she wasn’t answering the phone. I called her father, and he told me that she was my responsibility now. I need to get her. Andrei is scared that something happened to her or the baby. I think he might have taken her phone. Or worse.”

Sophia gasps. “I’m coming with you. Suppose that poor girl is hurt, I won’t be able to handle the guilt.” Her selflessness stuns me for a second.

“What about your plans?”

“I still have time. I’ll follow you in my car, and after I know Elena is okay, I’ll go my own way.”

“No, you will go with me, and I will drop you off.”

She laughs. “And you’re just going to walk away? Yeah, fucking right. Nope, I’m sticking to my plan. I’ll follow you.” Why the fuck doesn’t she want me to meet her family? Her family means the world to her. From what Robert said to me, they were close.

“Why don’t you want me to meet them?”

“We’re not or going to be a couple, Maxim. What happened last night won’t happen again. I don’t regret it, but I don’t want to repeat it. I’m not the woman for you. Go find someone more suitable for your lifestyle.”

What the fuck?Feeling angry at her comment, I grab her throat and slam her against the wall before realizing what I’m doing. Her eyes widen, and my cock strains against my pants at the sight of her panic.

“Listen closely, Sophia. I’m not fucking letting you go. You belong to me, and you better get used to that fact.”

As soon as the words leave my mouth, Sophia turns her body and hits my arm with hers, breaking the hold I have on her neck. Then she elbows my stomach, making a whoosh of air escapes me. She caught me off-guard. I crouch down, holding my stomach. Fuck. I’ve never found someone more attractive than I do at this moment. Does she know self-defense? That’s surprising and good to see; she will be able to hold her own in my world. She breathes heavily, trying to catch her breath.

“You fucking listen to me, Maxim. I don’t belong to you or anyone else. I will never bow down,” she says to me in between breaths.

After recuperating, I stand up. She’s a vixen, and I’m never letting her go, even if I have to fight her every day. Unable to help myself, I laugh.

“You are a fucking psycho for finding this situation funny.”

“Who taught you self-defense?” I say between bursts of laughter.

“Why does that matter?” she says, exasperated.
