Maxim

Spending Sunday relaxing and doing nothing is a rare occurrence for me. I like to spend my day catching up on things I don’t have the time for during the week. Not entertain a woman’s whims.

But seeing Sophia's face light up like a Christmas tree was the best experience I’ve had in a long time. Little things make her happy. I won’t lie; it was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. All we did was watch movies that showed me a new side—a nerdy side—of Sophia, one I never thought would attract me the way it did.

It was a very knowledgeable Sunday. I studied every single inch of her delectable body. I lost count of how many times she screamed my name. If she doubts who she belongs to after this weekend, she doesn’t anymore.

I’m infatuated with her and can’t get her out of my fucking mind. It’s been two days since I saw her last, and I’m going out of mind. I have been tempted to screw it all and run to her side, but I can’t afford that. I need to get my head back in the game.

Andrei snaps his fingers in front of my face. He knows I hate it. I grab his wrist and twist hard enough to cause him to grunt. Realizing my hold, he takes his hand back, rubbing his wrist with the other to ease the pain.

“What the fuck do you want, Andrei?”

“I want to be listened to when I speak.” I laugh at his ridiculous statement.

“When did you become my nagging wife?”

“Since you’ve been in Sophia land and not doing your job. What has gotten into you? She must be something special to have Maxim—the lion—Volkov distracted? Never thought I’d see the day.”

Sophia is more than special to me. She’s my weakness. I need to bring it back before someone catches on to that and uses her to get back at me. Then her biggest fear will come to fruition. That thought has my lion ready to pounce. No one is ever going to harm a hair on her head. I’ll kill anyone who even dares look at her the wrong way.

Andrei walks to the bar and makes himself a drink. “Do you want one?”

“Jack on the rocks.”

He makes our drinks, hands me mine, and sits down on the chair. My phone vibrates with a message from Sophia, responding to my earlier statement.

Me: How was your day, krasavitsa?

Sophia: It was tiresome. Nonstop patients.

Me: Are you home?

I know she’s at home. I checked her location earlier. But I wanted her to tell me. She doesn't know I shared her location with myself. I need to know where she’s at all the time.

Sophia: Yes.

“We need to go to escape tonight,” Andrei says.

“For what?” I ask without looking at him.

“If you had paid attention to me earlier. You would have heard that John thinks that someone is stealing.”

Could it be John stealing and trying to pin it on someone else? I don’t think he’s been a loyal manager for years, and we pay him well.

“What proof does he have?”

“For the last few days, inventory has been short. A few bottles of liquor from the top shelf have gone missing.”

“We’ll go before it opens. Make a surprise visit. Don’t tell anyone we’re going.”

He laughs. “Pussy-whipped.”

I get up and smack the back of his head before walking to the door. “Be ready in an hour,” I say before heading up the stairs to my room.

Since leaving the house, I felt off. Something doesn't feel right. I've had a strange feeling since Andrei mentioned what is happening at the club. Things don't add up. My gut is trying to tell me something. It has never steered me wrong, and it won’t start now. That’s why I have an extra gun and a few knives on me.

Before we exit the car, I tell Andrei, “Be alert.” He nods and steps out, with me following after him. When we’re halfway to the entrance, I notice the bodyguard isn’t at his post. Where the fuck is he?
