Sophia

I haven’t given up on getting answers. If that ape doesn’t want to give them to me, I'll find someone who will.

“Didn’t I tell you to remove your shirt?” I say, scolding Andrei.

“Take me out on a date first, doc, before trying to get me naked.”

I laugh because it’s impossible not to; Andrei has that charm and a killer smile that will make any girl melt. I’m not attracted to him, but he has this energy that draws you to make you want to be his friend—someone you can joke around with and laugh about it later. “I’ll make sure to keep that in mind.”

The door opens, and that ape walks in. “If you two are done flirting, let's speed this up. I have shit to do,'' he says in a tone that makes me shiver. Is he jealous? Doubtful. He can't stand me. Snapping out of my thoughts, I focus on Andrei and remove the patch over the stitches.

“Stitches are still intact, the wound seems to be healing well, and I don't see a sign of infection; I’d say everything is looking good.'' Maybe he can follow instructions after all. I quickly work on cleaning him up and putting on a set of fresh bandages. I want these men out of my clinic as soon as possible. After a few minutes, my task is complete. “You’re all set.” I grab a kit with a few supplies for him to clean himself and explain what he needs to do, making sure they don’t have another excuse to come back.

“Thank you, doc. You’re my lifesaver.” Andrei breathes in and out for a few seconds from pain. He recovers quickly and looks over at Bulky, contemplating something. Then he turns to me, and the look he gives me makes me take a step back. Andrei may seem all smiles and sweetness, but I’m sure his bite is just as deadly. “Sophia, sit down, please.”

“Why should I do that?” I snap. Does he think he can tell me what to do? I can’t believe I'm back in this exact situation. I woke up today, trying to put all the craziness from yesterday aside. Then the crazy shows up again.

“Before I say anything else”—he points at Bulky—“let me introduce you to my brother, Maxim.”

“Charmed,” I say in a dry tone. “Can we move this along? I have a full day today, and you’re both wasting my time.”

“Oh, trust me, doc. You’ll want to hear this, and I suggest you take a seat.”

“You’re being very dramatic. Get on with it.” I try to mask the fact that I’m utterly terrified. Millions of ideas cross my mind about what he’s going to say.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Maxim growls.

“I’m taking things into my own hands.”

“You’re crossing the fucking line, Andrei.”

Andrei looks back at me with panic-stricken eyes. “Sophia—” He tries to speak, but Maxim cuts him off.

“Not another fucking word.” Maxim gets in Andrei’s face.

“Listen to reason, Brother.”

“Why are you going against my wishes?” Maxim growls.

“We need her,” Andrei has resorted to pleading now, it seems.

“You know my reasons, Andrei.”

Don’t they realize I’m right here? Part of me is curious about what Andrei would say, but the rational part doesn’t want to be involved with them any more than I need to.

“She needs to know.”

“It’s not our responsibility to tell her anything.” My interest is piqued now.

“Maxim, please. Listen to me. You know you want this.”

Maxim sighs, then glares at me.

“You wanted answers.” Bulky directs this question—no, statement—at me.

I give him a curt nod, refusing to open my mouth and say something that would get him angry at me and not tell me anything.

“Sit down, then,” Maxim says, and I do what I'm told. He raises an eyebrow in surprise.
