Page 25 of Small Town Love

“I’ll see you tonight. Have a fantastic first day.”

She smiles up at me and I lean down, kissing her goodbye before I head out to my Jeep.

I spend the day meeting with the construction crew, grabbing lunch with Brooks before I drop him off at the airport, and then going grocery shopping.

Brooks is heading up to Pittsburgh. He’s going to hang out there and see if he likes the big city more than the small town. He’s already been in touch with Ender up there and I think he’s staying with him for a few days or one of his friends.

“Thanks for the hospitality, bud,” Brooks says, hugging me and clapping me on the back.

“Anytime. Don’t be a stranger,” I tell him.

“I won’t. I’ll talk to you soon,” he says as he grabs his bags and I wave as he heads inside the airport and I hop back into my Jeep.

It was nice having a familiar face around Rosewood and I’m going to miss rooming with Brooks. Even if he did snore and take too long in the shower.

Evangeline wants Italian for dinner, so I head to the Rosewood Market to grab spaghetti, sauce, and garlic bread.

I changed to a different hotel room and this one has a small kitchen area so that I don’t have to eat out for every single meal. It’s getting expensive to live there though and I know that I need to make a decision on my future soon.

Five-thirty rolls around and I change into a dark green Henley that reminds me of Evangeline’s eyes and a pair of blue jeans before I head over to Evangeline’s place. I can’t wait to see her and find out how opening day went.

Evangeline is outside on the porch, rocking in one of the chairs there and she jumps up when she sees me, coming over to the Jeep with a smile on her face.

“You look beautiful,” I say, leaning over the console to kiss her hello.

“Thanks,” she says as she smooths out her sundress.

It’s white with red roses all over it and it hugs her chest and flares out at the waist. She’s got a white pair of Keds on to match and she looks like a dream.

Like my dream.

I might not know what I want to do with the rest of my life, but I know that I want Evangeline in it.

“How was your day?” I ask her, taking her hand in mine as I drive us back to town.

“It was amazing! Even better than I dared to hope for. I sold a lot and I had a few more requests for landscaping ideas. I think I might have to seriously think about taking up some of these offers.”

“You should. You’ll be great at it.”

“Thanks. The hard part is that I need to hire someone to cover the nursery while I go out to see the land. I’m not sure that hiring an employee is in my budget right now.”

“I can help out,” I offer before I can think about it.

“I couldn’t ask you to do that,” she says as we pull into the hotel parking lot.

“I want to.”

I park and get out before she can argue with me some more. She’s trying to climb out and I hurry around the hood to help her down before she can dirty her pretty dress.

“Whoa!” she says as I grab her hips and lift her from the passenger seat. “Put me down or you’ll hurt yourself.”

She’s blushing as I hold her above the ground and I grin at her.

“Nah, you’re light as a feather,” I tell her and she beams at me.

I make a mental note to tell her constantly how beautiful she is and how much I love her curves. I know that kids used to pick on her when she was younger, but I guess that I always thought that she knew that they were just jealous of how pretty she is. I hope that she didn’t have any of those thoughts in her head as fact.

“Let’s get you upstairs and eat some carbs,” I say as I set her down on the sidewalk and interlock our fingers.
