She starts to unbuckle and I know that if I want to ask her out, now is the time to do it.

“We should do it again sometime,” I suggest and she frowns. “Not with your parents!”

Man, am I messing this up…

“Like a date?” she asks as she turns to face me more fully and I nod.

“Yeah, a date.”

“Okay,” she says with a shy smile.

Her cheeks turn a pale shade of pink and my stomach flips.

“Tomorrow?” I ask, and she nods, biting down on the full bottom lip.

“Here, I’ll give you my number.”

I pass her my phone and watch as she adds her phone number and calls herself.

“I’ll call you,” I promise her, and she gathers her things and moves to get out of the truck.

I jump out too, rounding the hood and helping her down.

“See you tomorrow,” she says, her hand squeezing mine as she passes me and heads for the front door.

I watch her go, my heart in my throat, and I know then that I need Betty in my life.

I can not mess this up.

ChapterFive

Betty

“This is really nice,” I tell Hayes as we take our seats at the cute little bistro in town.

He smiles at me across the table, looking relieved as he picks up his menu.

“I wasn’t sure what you were hungry for, but this is the top listing when you search for best date places in Redwood,” he tells me and I grin.

He seems so nervous and he’s still so thoughtful and earnest when he talks to me. He’s adorable, which is a word that I’m not sure anyone has used to describe Hayes before.

“Well, I love it. I’ve never been here before. Or on a date,” I admit, deciding to put all of my cards out there on the table.

“Me either,” he says, a faint pink flush staining his cheekbones.

We share a smile before we both start to look over the menu. I thought that I would be nervous to go on my first date, but being with Hayes is easy. It feels natural to sit across from him and none of the date jitters that I thought that I would experience have come.

“What looks good?” Hayes asks once I set my menu aside and I open my mouth to tell him when the waiter heads to our table and interrupts me.

“Welcome to Amelia’s Bistro. Can I get you started with something to drink?” she asks and I can’t help but notice the way that her eyes keep straying to Hayes.

“Can I get a water, please?”

“Me too,” Hayes says, and she nods as she scribbles it down on her pad.

“Are you ready to order now too?” she asks, her eyes landing on Hayes once again and possessiveness starts to flood my body.

Can she not see me? Does she not realize that this is a date?
