Freddie looked as though he did not know what to say. He opened and closed his mouth quite a few times before he was finally able to conjure something up.

“Robert, right, of course,” he said, as though he only remembered this fact just now as well. “Robert is my brother’s name, and I mentioned that to Lord George the other day when we were talking. He must have got our names confused and then referred to me by my brother’s name.”

Freddie chuckled to himself, but there was something about how he had said it that made Anne believe he had made that up. But for the time being, she was not too bothered by the slip of the wrong name, and so she decided to leave it. She was so happy that Freddie felt the same way about her that she did about him, so she decided to focus on that.

“Yes, all right,” Anne said understandingly. “I do hate to break up this joyous occasion, but I am afraid that the night has grown quite late, and the children are always awake very early. I must excuse myself and go to bed. Goodnight, Mr Austen.”

Anne gave Freddie a chaste kiss upon the cheek and tried to walk away, but Freddie grabbed her hand. She turned around and smiled at him.

“I will let you go as soon as you tell me when I might get to see you again,” he said, his anticipation palpable in his speech. “That way, I might ... have something to look forward to.”

With that, Anne’s heart entirely melted. She strode back to Freddie and kissed him passionately once more, wrapping her arms around him. They stayed like that for a long while, until Anne was finally able to tear herself away.

“Tuesday evening. Lord George and Lady Eponine are taking the children into town for Amelie’s birthday, so I shall be free. Perhaps I could interest you in a turn about the garden? We could walk to the very, very far edge of the property so that no one might see us?”

Freddie’s eyes lit up. “I would do absolutely anything with you, Anne. Now, you must run along to bed; otherwise, I fear that I would just spend the rest of the night kissing you.”

Anne giggled once more and gave him one final kiss. “Why would that be such a bad thing?”

She strode confidently out of the room, but the truth was she had left her heart in the hands of that incredibly handsome property manager.
