Imagining a world populated with mini-Paulas, he smiled. “And a man? Does your long-term plan include one of those?”

“Oh, sure, why not?”

He stooped and nudged her jaw with his. “What about the short term?”

“Are you asking me if I’m looking for a man on a short term basis?” She hadn’t pulled away from him, but her tone was wary.

“I’m asking you if it’s mutual. If you like the idea of unwrapping me.” His voice sounded low and thick to his own ears.

Her breath came out in rapid puffs. “You know I have way more pride than to answer that.”

She might not want to say it, but her eyes were big with black pupils and she leaned into him, as drawn to him as he was to her.

It was mutual, he was almost sure of it. He simply had to hope she would let herself admit it.

He let his palm smooth over her hair, fighting the urge to sink in his fist. “How about after we’re done with this circus, we discuss it.”

“Discuss...opening presents?”

“And tasting them. I can’t imagine any treat more succulent than you.”

He didn’t understand why her look held such skepticism. She was a confident woman; she must know her effect on men. He’d let her feel her effect on him earlier. He’d practically drooled all over her. “Um, tonight?”

“Or anytime. I just want you. Tell me you want me too, Paula.”

She sucked in a breath, then turned her head, her eyes fluttering closed. The sheer feminity of her, of everything she did, blew him away. He let himself breathe in her scent, inhale until his lungs felt fit to burst. And then he took her hand in a possessive grip.

“I’ll take that as a solid maybe,” he muttered, expelling a breath of frustration, and led her through the snow, taking heart from the way she snuggled against his side.
