“And the dog. Remember the dog?”

“I do remember the dog.”

“It’s a lot bigger,” she said, poking her tongue in her cheek.

“So?”

“So…I’m waiting for your masculinity to be threatened.”

He flashed her an amused look, coming to a stop near a closed door. With a bland smile, he opened the door with more ceremony than Paula thought warranted, and then stood back to let her check it out.

The master bedroom. Prudently she remained in the doorway.

The room was tidy, with nothing out of place, very different from her own. The bedcovers and window treatments were a warm-toned gray. The king-sized bed was fully made up and unrumpled.

“Hmm.”

“What?”

“I’m surprised Georgette didn’t leave anything behind,” she said, turning around and folding her arms.

She caught his eyes traveling up and down her curves. “Who?” he said absently. It was more than clear where his mind was going.

“Georgette,” she drawled, waving her hand in front of his face. “I heard you say she had a bad night. I don’t see any sign of her anywhere.”

“Her stuff was in the other bedroom.”

The other bedroom? It was?“Who cleaned up? Where’s her stuff now?”

“I did. I had her bag couriered. She didn’t have much.” He paused. “Georgette and I haven’t been together that way in a while,” he ventured after the silence stretched out to an improbable length.

“Did I ask?”

“In your own way, yes. Loud and clear, honeycrisp.”

“You’re getting good at reading my mind,” she approved. “Ihavebeen wondering how much of a player you are.”

“I’m not any kind of player.” Those intense eyes canceled the few feet of physical distance between them. “I don’t go to bed with every woman I escort. Far from it.”

“Numbers mean more to me than vague statements.”

“Last spring was the last time I slept with Georgette or anyone,” he said bluntly.

“Before I even moved in?” She tipped her head. “You’ve been dating her all this time and…nothing. Nothing at all.”

He read her skepticism. “You don’t believe me?”

“You do kiss. I know you do that.”

His eyes narrowed. “There’s nothing wrong with my sex drive, if that’s what you’re implying. Georgette and I didn’t have any chemistry together. We let that element of our arrangement lapse.”

Boring in bed.She remembered.

“But you kept up the transactional part of it.Arrangement, you call it. You know, that is so beyond my ken, I can’t even say. I only date when I like a guy.”

“Dating has never been about attraction for me.”

“Hmm.”
