To Priscilla:

Happy Xmas!! Sorry they wouldn’t give you two measly weeks off. Yes, send it to me even if it’s rough, I can’t wait! The neighbor did invite me to do “something” on Christmas but I’m thinking of canceling. I’m not about to wait around all day for him. It was one of those swept-up-in-the-moment things. The prince might have been charming but it’s nothing serious.

Replies started coming in immediately.

Two more rounds of texts later, Paula was busy arguing that Bastian Spencer was not an important topic when a knock came at her front door.

At the same time, her phone went off.

Bastian.

She scrambled up, her heart doing a crazy staccato. “I can hear you at the door,” she breathed into the phone. “You were supposed to call first.”

“How did you know it’s me knocking?”

“You knocked the same way yesterday.”

Just as he challenged, “I have a signature knock?” she flung open the front door, heedless of her appearance or anything except the voice inside her saying,Goody, he’s here!
