“Isn’t that what you do when you come upstairs to my room?”

I smile. “Yup, but haven’t been caught yet.”

“And if you do?”

I look at her briefly and wink. “I’ll look for another job with my balls empty and a smile still on my face.”

Saona

I don’t even know what the crab tasted like. The whole meal, like the whole day, my thoughts are on Jax. Last night had more than lived up to my fantasies for the past three months.I could have done without the rough beginning, though.

His messages all day, like always, it seems, came at the right time. Whenever I was getting ready to throttle an employee, or fall asleep during a meeting, a message from him would come through—I’m still thinking of you, I hope you’re having a great lunch, I can’t wait to see you tonight. I would end up flustered or smiling and in a way better mood.

It’s funny how he doesn’t seem fazed by this being our first time in public together. Last night didn’t count. He barely interacted with the waiter but tonight he’s been smiling and super polite the whole time. Is this how he always acts after he’s gotten laid all night?

Or is it something else?

I’ve been keeping my mind off last night. Well, the parts I can, because those memories of Jax’s lips, his hands, his body on top of—or under or behind—mine, I’m hopeless against those. Especially when he’s sitting across the table, moving those lips or curving them so sexy. I’m hot at what I know he can do to me, what he’s already hinted he’s going to do to me tonight after he’s done with work.

What I’m trying not to think about is the words that were said and the ones that haven’t been. I’m trying not to dwell on his admission that he hasn’t gone out with his friends to stay on the phone with me. I’m also not analyzing my reaction to him flirting with that girl. That’s why when he asked if I wanted to grab dinner tonight, I’d kept my hopes low. Everyone’s gotta eat, right? We just happened to do it together. It doesn’t make it a date.

We’re not kissing or making plans and he already knows he’s getting lucky. So am I. It’s all very relaxed, talking about our days.

“I told Mom I was going out with you tonight.”

I almost choke. “What? Why?”

“She was worried about my balls going blue.”

I start laughing until I realize he’s serious. “What kind of things are you telling your mother?”

He shrugs. “My mom and my aunt started readingCosmomagazine last year. They started getting someone’s subscription and though they called and reported the error, the magazine keeps coming in the mail. They read it and discuss it. There was some article about blue balls in the last issue.”

“Wow, that’s pretty cool.”

He smirks. “’cause it’s not your balls being discussed.”

“Maybe, but they sound awesome. My mom would have a conniption if we discuss anything sex-related around her. I think Sierra and I could have benefited if she had been open-minded like your mom. When do you see her again?”

“I’m going there next weekend. There’s stuff around the house that needs maintenance and I want to make sure they don’t need anything and are not telling me.”

I lean forward and grab his hand. “You’re a good son.”

He runs his knuckles over my hand. “She’s a great mom. And plus, it makes no sense to pay for things I can do.”

“Why would they hide it?”

“They don’t want me to worry. Mom wants me to spend my time and money on fixing my house. But I need to take care of my ladies.”

I smile. “Like you promised your grandpa.”

Something tells me he would take care of them regardless. His dad died when he was young and his mom, aunt, and grandfather raised him. They’re family-stands-by-family people. We are too. I just wish my mom was a little more flexible about that when it came to sons-in-law. Particularly, the soon-to-beex-son-in-law.

“Does it bother you I told her?”

Jax’s question takes me by surprise. His eyes on mine are so intense, burning a hole right through me, but I can’t look away. It doesn’t bother me he told her but this conversation makes me nervous because, where is it going? Why did he bring it up?
