I feel stronger than I’ve ever been, and it’s thanks to my mates. They’re helping me to move past this. I’m learning who I am now, anxious to start my life for real.

“God. Oh my God. That's…I’ve been wondering about that place. About the other people there. There’s a lot of them then?”

“More than there should be. I know it’s short notice, and it’s quite a drive, but would you be interested in coming along? I could show you where I’ve lived, share some of my memories. It might help you see some things.”

“You’d want me there?”

“Yes,” I say simply.

“Then nothing will stop me. Will Parker be joining us too, or just your mates?”

I love how easily he’s accepted that I’m mated. He hasn’t once questioned their worthiness, or why I chose them. He hasn’t made any threats to them about treating me right, he just trusts that I know what I’m doing. It makes it a lot easier to want to get closer to him.

“I was going to call Parker next, because I want you both there. I really think you deserve to see where I’ve been.WhoI’ve been. I don’t want you guys to feel sorry for me for how I’ve lived, but I do think it will help you understand me better. I want to move forward from this chapter of my life, and this feels like the right way to start doing that.”

“Well then, I can get with Parker and arrange everything. Just let me know where to meet you, and we will make it happen. How soon until we need to leave?”

Kit takes control of the conversation now, rubbing my back as he does. “Hello Sir,” he starts. “We really appreciate you doing this for us. For our girl. It will mean a lot to her to have you guys there.”

“I’m honored to be included.”

“The detective wants us there as soon as possible, and it’s about an 8-hour drive. We were going to head out within the next hour, probably get a hotel for the night and finish the drive in the morning. I know it’s a bit later in the day, so if you wanted to, we could give you directions and help you once you got closer. Or you could leave the same time we do, and we can all stay together. Either way, it’s your choice.”

“May I discuss things with my son and get back to you? I’m not sure what his schedule is today, but I know he’ll clear anything to be there for Calai. He’s going to want this as badly as I do.”

“Of course, do what you need to do. We are going to be packing for the trip and making sure that Calai is in the right state of mind. Just let us know your decision, and we’ll let you know when we’re leaving.”

“Will do. And Calai, thank you. For thinking of me. It really means a lot to me that you reached out to include me.”

“Thank you for wanting to be there for me, even though we’re practically strangers. This can’t be any easier for you than it is on me. But I think we can get through it together.”

“We sure can, my darling girl. Your mother would be so proud of you. For coming through all this so strong. You’re definitely her daughter.”

I’m able to choke out some nonverbal response before we hang up the phone. I get one massive hug from all of my guys at once, and it goes a long way in steadying me again. Of course, they let me do absolutely nothing in terms of packing. Snacks and tea are thrust into my hands, and I’m placed on the couch with a blanket and strict instructions not to go anywhere. I watch as they pack everything up in a flurry, joking around as they do it, tossing each other things across the room that they need, working like a team. August isn’t quite at that level yet, and his stuff is in the house out back, but I know we’ll get there.
