Calai doesn’t speak as we drive, doesn’t comment on the speed with which Kit tries to escape us, nor the frequency in which all of us are glancing out the rear mirrors for followers, but then, she’s never been in a car, so she would have no reason to know this isn’t a typical drive.

I put my focus on her, watching her eyes widen with everything we pass. I can almost visualize everything she’s been taught about the outside world crumbling around her, and I’d give almost anything to know what she’s thinking.

Kit slows down only enough to stay under notice when we pass through the nearest town, obeying all traffic laws so no one has cause to pull us over. When Calai’s eyes light upon all the pedestrians about doing their shopping, she flinches away from the window. I try to see all this through her eyes, but I have nothing to compare it to. Doubtful she’s ever seen this many people before not doing something necessary, let alone walking along whilst holding hands with men.

She watches some as they hold leashes and pet their dogs, and I wonder if she even knows what a dog is. How would it be possible to survive into adulthood in this day and age and be so unknowledgeable about the world around you?

I have half a mind to tell Kit to turn around so I can burn down the rest of that damn compound.

I take her hand, scooting in a little bit so I can hold her closer. “This must be overwhelming for you,” I say. She nods, wide-eyed, too distracted to even whine about her gag now. I eye Kit in the mirror for approval, letting my eyes show my thanks for it.

I try to remove the gag without any roughness, but my fingers seem too clumsy. I’m probably malnourished from my stay at that compound, not to mention the running and hiking to get back to the jeep, so I’m thankful when Colter passes back a bag of water and snacks.

Not even trying to fight my pull towards her, I open the water and offer it to my omega first, watching raptly as she swallows down mouthfuls. When a rogue drop skips down her chin and hits her neck, I don’t curb my instincts; I lean forward and lick it, simultaneously pulling the flavor of her skin into my mouth. She stills underneath me, but I’m satisfied with my work.

I pull back and offer her a bite of granola bar I’ve already opened, feeding her as though she’s unable to do so herself. It’s wild to be feeling these drives that I’ve spent so long burying, to need to take care of someone like this. But if I’m hungry now, I have no way of telling. My entire being is locked in on Calai and what her body needs. “Welcome to our world, little omega,” I whisper.

I plant my hand that’s not around her shoulder onto her thigh, savoring the warmth soaking through her dress. I need to burn this fucking thing. It’s the most offensive piece of women’s clothing that I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing.

After a few more mouthfuls of water and another couple bites of granola bar, she pulls away and returns to peering out the window at the shops and homes we’re passing. Everything entrances her, just as everything she does entrancesme.

“It really was a lie? Everything about…the outside?” Her voice is quiet, like she’s scared someone will overhear her and punish her for voicing doubts.

“Yes. I don’t know all that you were told back there, but I’d wager they didn’t tell you anything accurate,” Colter supplies.

I can feel his gaze on Calai as surely as mine is. “What are all these people doing?”

“That’s a grocery store- for buying food, that’s a hair salon where they cut and color hair, that up there is a school for children, lots of these are shops for buying various goods…it’s called shopping.”

I let my thumb find its way to her neck, tracing soothing circles there. She relaxes into it a little, and I notice some tension leave her upper body. “I don’t know what to think right now,” she says, sounding on the verge of tears.

“We live outside the bounds of any sort of township, so you won’t be overwhelmed in our home. At least not from being around too many new things like this. I do, however, expect to overwhelm you sexually, at every turn.” Kit says in such a normal tone, making me smirk. The funny thing is, he sees that eventuality as normal. We’ve got our omega, so bedding her and blowing her mind is the natural follow-through.
