I snort. There’s not many that would talk back to an alpha like that, and I kind of really love it. The fact that the scrap of a thing has no idea about societal norms, or how to deal with an alpha, makes her so refreshing.

“No yelling,” Colter reassures her, glaring at Kit.

“We ate plain ricemostof the time, but once we proved our ability to bleed, we also got milk and vegetables. So if you never bled, you had to wait for special occasions to get different things to eat. Great Mother told us that consuming simple foods kept our souls pure.”

We all stare at her, sure that we mis-heard her. Nope, she's serious. Then I think of something. “Well, if we're going by her ideology, which is a terrible idea by the way, I'm basically your god given form, right? That's why I was taken and locked up there. To trick you all into thinking he was real?”

She blanches. “Ernyu isn't real?”

Now we’re on a sensitive topic, because as crazy as this woman sounds right now, if we laugh at her she’ll think we’re making fun of her. This bullshit has been ingrained inside of her brain, so we need to address this in a way that lets her know it’s wrong, without making her feel bad for believing it.

“It’s not our word that decides who or what any of us should believe in. I will tell you, however, that I’ve lived in this world for my entire life, and in all the different beliefs I’ve come across, I have not once heard that name muttered. Maybe we just call him something different out here, or maybe this was yet another tool that you’re so called ‘Great Mother’ used to control you all. That seems to be the more likely scenario to me.”

She looks me up and down intently, squinting her eyes as if she’s able to see more than what’s visible on the surface. “You look like you could be make-believe, but…I think you're just flesh and bone, like me. Was any of it real?”

We don't necessarily want to shatter her world, but we don't want her misled about anything now that she's free of there, either.

“Maybe, until you can discover we’re for sure wrong, we should just assume that any of the doctrine that was likely beat into you during your tenure at that compound, was completely unsubstantiated.”

She watches Colter follow this up with a carefully prepared bite of chicken mole, and she lets him feed her. She blinks rapidly before a little smile breaks out on her face and she starts reaching for different foods with more confidence.
