Proving yet again that Kit is always on the same mind wavelength as me, his fist breaks through the glass and the glorious explosion of sound, the way the glass tinkles on the night air, mixes with the sound of the rain. It’s almost as beautiful as the screams of the woman as Kit's hands find her neck.

That move seems to snap Calai out of her stupor.

Omega she might be, but she’s also strong as hell.

A dark smile finds its way to my face as Calai decides to take her destiny in her own hands. Her knee smashes up in between the wide-legged stance of the guy with the gun, smashing whatever little piece of manhood flesh that hung there previously. He squeals, adding to tonight’s soundtrack.

When the accomplice drops to his knees, he also drops the gun. Rookie mistake. I jump at him, throwing him away from my mate. Kit punches the cult leader across the temple, and she crumples like a paper doll.

The door we came through flies open as August and James hobble their way out, unsteady on their feet. They have their hands on their head like they’re in pain, and their eyes are frantic. They get the gist of the situation pretty dang quick. Even though they’re clearly still recovering from whatever trauma was just gifted to them, they make a go of grabbing at the guy that took our girl. He’s still rolling on the ground covering himself, making him the perfect target for August's boot. The sickeningly loud crunch of his nose keeps our symphony going, his now nasally screams adding a nice color change.

I’m almost mad when the flashing lights show up because it means that my fun time is over. I scoop Calai into my arms, hold her to me tightly. “I’m so damn proud of you, omega. You did so good.” There are fine tremors working her way down her entire frame, but I don’t think it’s from her heat any longer. The poor thing is beside her mind in fear. With our enemies disabled, my pack gathers around and shelters our vulnerable omega. The cops jump out of their car with guns raised, and for a second, I’m worried they’re going to be dumb and assume that we’re the bad guys.

Luckily Kit fights his way through his raging hormones that are hammering at him to protect his mate, and he raises his hands to show he’s not a threat. My face gets locked onto Calai, rage building in me again as a small cut makes itself known above her eyebrow.

“He hurt her,” I tell my pack. “Can we kill him yet?”

James tries to laugh this off because the cops can no doubt hear me; “Ha ha ha, you’re always so damn funny, man. We wouldn’t… he’s joking officers. Really.” I try to play it off like it’s some joke, even though there are two unconscious people right next to us. It totally looks like some macabre play could have been staged back here, right? I even take my hands out of my pockets, trying to look as nonthreatening as possible. Oops. I’m holding the guy’s gun still. I hadn’t quite realized that I had taken it from him, but I drop it with another nervous laugh.

“You boys mind telling us what’s gone down here tonight? Why there’s two bloodied people lying about this alley?”

Their guns stay raised because they’re actually smart. They know that we are dangerous right now. But only if they decide to try and get between us and our omega.

“We were enjoying a night out with our mate,” Kit tells the officers, completely keeping the ball rolling with this nice guy routine that I started. I’m not sure it’s as effective on him, because he looks scary under normal circumstances.

“This woman here,” Kit says, pointing towards the slumped-over body in the front seat of the car, “tried to kidnap our omega. This man on the ground, was her accomplice. He grabbed our mate and dragged her out here, while the female attempted to drive them away. We did what we had to do to protect our mate.”

There are EMTs evaluating our victims, putting them onto stretchers. It’s a waste of medical training if you ask me. All they have to do is toss them in the dumpster ten feet behind us, and everyone would have a much better evening.

“Do you know this woman?” The alpha cop asks Kit. Having an alpha here could be to our advantage. He’ll understand exactly how serious we get when it comes to protecting our mate, protecting our packs.

“We have an ongoing case against her. She originally kidnapped our omega when she was a child, and she leads a cult up in the woods about a day's drive south of here. We liberated Calai recently and were horrified to find out the conditions she has been living in all these years. She didn’t even know she was missing. Her whole life was taken away from her, and we’ve only just started to help her get it back. With all due respect, there was no other way for this night to end the second that monster decided to come for my mate. I’m going to be honest; my instincts are raging at me to kill her. I won’t, but only because I know you’re going to do the right thing and lock her up.”

Shit. That was probablytoomuch honesty from him.

“So… you attacked them in self defense? Can I get a team over here to do an exam on your omega? Is she injured?”

I pull her tighter to my chest, no way in hell are they taking her away from me right now. “I’m fine,” she says as loudly as she can manage.

An omega in distress has a weapon that’s potent against alphas. We are helpless to react to it. She’s emitting pheromones right now that demand we protect her, to care for her. Her scent has changed, telling us she’s scared. She’s whimpering, while her eyes sink to the ground. The alpha cop squats down so he’s on a similar level to her. He has scooted forward so he’s closer to her a little bit, and I can see the tension on his face that tells me he wants to comfort her too. Not in the same way we want to, but because biology tells him that this omega must be protected.

“Can you tell us your story, ma’am? I know you’ve been through a lot tonight. If you want your mates to come home with you tonight, we need your testimony on record. Otherwise, we're going to have to bring them to the station for a bit of questioning.”

Calai leans on me for support, making me feel about five feet taller than I am. I feel important. Needed. “I was just sitting at the table with all of them, when somebody came from behind and ripped me out of my chair. I was dragged down a hallway with a hand over my mouth. I tried to fight, but he was too strong for me. He took me out here, where I saw that woman in the car.”

“And did you recognize either one of them?” The cop asks in a sympathetic voice. I’m starting to get territorial now because this cop is trying to soothe my omega. I start purring for her, and the effect is immediate. Her body becomes more pliant, and the tremors slow down.

“I don’t know her proper name, I only know her as Great Mother. She basically raised me.”

“Is she your mother?”

Calai shakes her head no and clings on to my arm a little bit tighter. “She was the head of the compound I spent most of my life at. Memories have started coming back to me of my life before. I was taken from a playground when I was playing with my brother, at a young age. She…has not had a positive influence on my life. She fed me nothing but lies, ruined my life.”

“Was anyone else injured?”

Calai makes a grab at James and August, not taking no for an answer when the EMTs once again offer their services. James seems to think her stubbornness is amusing, while August seems to think it's cute. He keeps winking at her and blowing kisses while he gets checked over.

When they're both cleared with instructions to take it easy, there’s absolutely no faking the reaction Calai has to the woman who is now being carted away in an ambulance. Because the cop values his life, he gets our numbers so we can follow up tomorrow, then tells us to get our omega home. I know we’ll have to deal with the aftermath of this later, but right now we need to get Calai home so she can be in her nest and feel safe.

I’m pissed that this beautiful night that we planned ended like this. That Calai is going to have memories of this happening when she thinks of this restaurant and hotel.

We're standing basically in the back corner of the alley now, and my omega is shaking. Terrified, overwhelmed, and once again upset over something that shouldn't have happened. She hasn't eaten, she's probably getting cold, and she got all dressed up just to get taken and nearly assaulted. We need to do something drastic to cheer her up, so I spend a minute thinking hard while the cops and emergency personnel wrap up their stuff and one by one head out.

The idea comes to me, and it's completely crazy, but it just might put a smile on my girl’s face, which is really what we need right now.

It takes one phone call to security to get the cameras back here disabled, and I know with the location of this hotel, there's absolutely no reason anyone else would be coming down here. I should probably talk to my pack mates before I start so I don't end up looking even dumber when no one joins in with me. But I'm really hoping they figure out what I'm doing quickly.

Well, here goes nothing.
