My correction isn’t what he wanted to hear, and he reacts immediately. Taking that right from him seems to strike a chord, like I suddenly have no right to revoke my place in his life.

“You’re telling the truth?” he asks, his tone low, and I can hear he’s daring me to confess it’s all a lie. “Everything you just said, Talia… that’s the God’s honest truth?”

“It’s the God’s honest truth.”

“Swear on my life.”

His life was always the most valuable thing to me. I held it so carefully, scared of its fragility. Years on, it’s still the most valuable thing to me. This time the reasons have changed, but at the crux of it all, nothing’s changed.

So, it’s all too easy to say, “I swear on your life.”

And it’s all too easy for him to storm out of the room.
