“Sebastian, you’d best know what you’re talking about to throw that sort of accusation around.”

“Think about it, Beck. Talia’s just told you this whole story. Alistair’s been extra on edge since you brought her here. Nicolas died suddenly after saying all of this weird shit about lies and secrets and trust.”

“He was in his seventies.”

“Age doesn’t mean shit anymore. Wake up, Beck!”

“No! That doctor said his heart was weak.”

“Not that weak, though!” he argues, tossing his hands up. “Alistair always wanted you to be in the main seat of all of this. He wanted you to be the boss. Why wouldn’t he cut corners to make that happen faster?”

Reality is like a slap to the face sometimes, and for the most part, I dodge it well. This matter, however, isn’t one I can escape any longer. I need to deal with this how a true leader would. Nicolas left me with all of the power. I’m meant to protect it all, and maybe when he told me so, he didn’t mean just brick and mortar.

“I need to go.”

“Beckett… babe? What’s going on in that head?”

Raising my gaze a few inches, I regard him across the small space and hope he listens to my silent request to let me do this alone.

“If what Natalia just told me is true, you’d best find my father before I do. He’s going to wish he could trade places with Nicolas.”

I turn to leave, knowing I can’t stay in this room anymore. I need to turn the tide and show

which side I’m truly on.

“Where are you going?” he calls after me.

I keep moving but chuck one last comment over my shoulder.

“I told her no one touches her. My father isn’t exempt from that.”
