My game plan was a lot simpler than this. I was going to walk back into London, demand attention, and command the way my namesake did before me. I was going to be the first queen of The Company, and I was going to do the job with absolute justice.

“I think that was a given,” he agrees.

“We were meant to rule it, Seb. Me and Beck… we were meant to have full control. That was always the plan.”

“But then he ruined it all?”

“Yeah.” I sigh. “Doesn’t matter now, I guess.”

“I can tell there’s still something between you, you know?” A sad smile accompanies his words. “I think everyone can see it. All the years and all the shit that went down haven’t changed a thing.”

That’s the sorriest state of affairs. I simmered on my emotions for seven years, locked myself away for so long that the line between love and hate blurred and merged, and now I can’t separate the two.

“Do you know Andreas knew I was still in love with him? Apparently, you have the same insight as him.”

“What of your dead best friend?” His response is quick, the sarcasm loosely hanging on every syllable. “Let’s hope I don’t end up like him.”

“Whatever will Beckett do without you?”

My sarcasm matches his, and he latches onto it and laughs.

“Speaking of the devil, I was meant to make sure you weren’t causing trouble.” He fixes me with a look, but it melts into the boyish grin that always got him into trouble. “I’ll come back and check on you before I have to march you back to your room.”

I flare my nostrils at my prisoner status, but Sebastian clearly doesn’t see as he starts to leave. I could almost believe I’m not a captive here when I’m allowed to roam.

“Seb?” I call out, stopping him. “You know Andreas didn’t have to die, right?” I know no one will believe me, but it has to be said. “He was never collateral damage.”

“Should’ve made that clear before he took a bullet for you.”

With that, he leaves me, and the silence is suddenly deafening.
