Page 34 of Mine to Keep

“I’ll have a few in the pub by the time you get there too,” James offered. I nodded in his direction before leveling with Ava’s nervous gaze.

“Do I need to tell you what will happen if I find out you gave my friend a hard time?” I murmured threateningly. I was dead serious. If she did anything to put herself in danger, I would make certain that she wouldn’t sit for a week.

She visibly paled and shook her head. I hoped she realized the gravity of the whole situation and that she wouldn’t risk herself unnecessarily.

“No, sir,” she answered. Her gaze dropped to my belt and then to my hand. I did nothing to deny her suspicions. She’d get a whole lot more than that if she disobeyed me.

“Good. I expect to see you here when I get back,” I replied.

I took three quick steps and grabbed her by the back of the neck. I pulled her up off the couch and kissed her roughly.

“I’m still going to fuck you tonight,” I growled, and she squealed in embarrassment, glancing at James as her cheeks pinkened.

“Cyrus!” she exclaimed.

James chuckled next to me. “I’ll have a room prepared for the two of you,” he laughed, and Ava covered her face in her hands.

“Maybe the one on the opposite side of the house. I plan to make her scream and I wouldn’t want to keep you up when I get back,” I continued. Ava sat down on the couch with a dramatic wail. I laughed lightly and kissed the top of her head.

“Be a good girl for me,” I said lightly.

“I will, Cyrus,” she answered. She was still blushing furiously.

I could feel her eyes watching me as I strode out of the room and out the front door.

“She’ll be safe here,” James called out.

“I know. Call me if she gives you any trouble,” I demanded.

“I will,” he grinned. “Oh, and do me a favor. Give them hell for me.”

“Don’t worry. That little shit is going to pay,” I smirked.

“That’s what I like to hear,” he said, his eyes sparkling darkly.

I quickly raced down the front stoop and climbed into the back of my SUV. Frank already had the car running and he pressed his foot to the pedal without needing to be told. The tires squealed against the pavement.

“Take me back to McGuire’s,” I directed, then sat back with an exasperated sigh. My whole body was vibrating with tension and if Anthony wasn’t careful, it was all going to explode in his face. I wasn’t sure yet if it was going to be my fist or a bullet.

Time would soon tell.

When my car pulled up to the bar, I didn’t waste a second and jumped out of the car before it came to a complete stop. Without missing a beat, I strode purposefully inside. I glanced around the place, looking for signs of foul play. There were several people there, but none of them seemed particularly interested in me.

I wasn’t certain which men answered to James, but I knew they were there. I gave a quick nod to the bartender. He was a close friend of mine from several years ago. He also happened to own the bar.

“It’s nice to see you, Gerard,” I called out and he beckoned me over. His face was blank, but I knew the man well. There was a single vein that was throbbing on the right side of his forehead. It always did that when he was concerned about something.

“Is Jon in the back?” I asked as I approached the bar, and he shook his head.

“No. He wanted me to give you this though,” Gerard answered hurriedly. He slipped a note across the bar, and I picked it up warily. The message appeared to be written hastily and I read through it quickly.

Cyrus,

Someone told Anthony about who you are, and he refused to come with me. He’s sending his men in his place. Mikey is in our booth. He wasn’t harmed, but I had to get out of here so that I could try to get a hold of the whole situation. I’ll delay him as much as I can but be ready.

He wants to kill you. He thinks that if he can take down a man like you that he’ll be the most powerful man in the city.
