“Did you know that an outdoors survival assignment was part of it?”

“Yes.” Her answer was nervous, unsure of where the conversation was going.

“Think of that like mentally turning on the water. In a way, you choose this. Maybe you didn’t pick the location, but you knew you would be outdoors. It rains outside. That can’t be controlled. But you could have decided on a class that didn’t have a wilderness survival project. Yet still, youchosethis one.” Brett did his best to keep his voice soft so he didn’t sound like he was lecturing her. He just hoped he was going about the situation in the right way. He didn’t want to offend Ellie. He just wanted to help her. To put her at ease.

A distant look washed over Ellie’s face as if she were miles away. She bit the edge of her lip. The action lit a fire in Brett’s soul, sending shivers down his spine. He wanted to know what it would feel like if her teeth nibbled on parts of his body. He pushed the thought down. He needed to focus.

“I guess you are right. If I think of it that way, this feels less… scary.” Her shoulders rounded as she relaxed, leaning back into the seat of the bus. The tension in her body deflated with a long sigh. Her rigid shadows softened into slow-moving arcs, rolling off her arms.

Brett nodded. “Acceptance is huge. And it’s accomplished by a small change in perception.” He smiled triumphantly, hoping the hardest part of the trip was over. If Ellie could relax, then she could focus. Which would help him to concentrate on the task at hand.

Ellie smiled brightly. “Thank you.”

Her words warmed Brett’s heart.

The bus was like a beacon as the sun’s rays reflected off of it. Dr. Smith watched it pull out of FUCN’A. The brush shrouded him and his binoculars as he watched the shadow cat step onto the vehicle, her dark matter flowing off of her in swirling waves.

Interesting.

The girl was far more valuable to his next set of experiments than he had originally realized.

Dr. Smith slowly pulled the receiver out of his pocket, careful not to disturb the greenery around him, as he didn’t need to attract any unwanted attention. With the press of a button, he activated the tracking device he’d had his minion hide in her backpack when it was still in her room. He needed to catch that kitty, and it would be much easier to do that when she was far away from WANC, the FUC agents, instructors, and other cadets.

When Dr. Smith’s minion reported on the assignment the girl would be on, Dr. Smith couldn’t believe his ears. They were practically gift-wrapping the shifter for him.

The round red glow on the display of the device in his hand indicated that the tracker was working. While Dr. Smith’s minion could not provide most of the details of the assignment the cadets were on, Dr. Smith knew they would be left unattended—unprotected!—in the wilderness. It provided him with the perfect opportunity to pluck the kitten from the safety of her new nest. Then she would be his to control.

As the bus pulled out of the facility, the blinking red light on his display moved to show its location on the GPS. Now all he had to do was follow from a safe distance and claim his prize. He smiled wickedly at the thought. Science was his mistress, and the thought of a girl who could bend light around her like a cocoon was orgasmic.
