Now
Eleven days.
Eleven days after the hard end to the most incredible thirty-nine years of my life, it was fitting to feel the calm right here, right now.
There’d been a painful holiday—a holiday where the kids had to come into holiday break earlier than scheduled.
A painful birthday that the boys had to prepare to play after.
The boys could have stayed home. The Enforcers organization was ours; we didn’t build it from the ground, no, but we were the Enforcers.
The Enforcers were us.
But my boys went on to play, and they played fucking hard. I couldn’t be any prouder of them.
They played, they won...and they were all back today.
For her holiday.
I squeezed the bridge of my nose as I looked out over the frozen lake, remembering a time long, long ago, that I brought Ryleigh out here.
Life had been good.
Really fucking good.
But the last three years had been really fucking hard.
Life had a way of testing you, and she sure put my family through the wringer. Just when you thought you were on even ground again, though, she ripped the rug out from under you.
My life changed for the better one November day, thirty-nine years ago.
My life changed again and again, with Ryleigh by my side.
But then eleven days ago…
Eleven days ago, everything changed.
And I didn’t know how the fuck I was going to move on from it.
