Now

That had beenquite the season.

Game-changing.

Life-changing.

I twisted my wedding ring around my finger as I stared out over the lake.

There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that Ryleigh had been my good luck charm, and it all started with that small, folded piece of paper passed down because my girl didn’t have the courage to do it herself.

If only she knew then, what a courageous woman she would become…

I swallowed back the lump in my throat, trying to focus on the past again.

After that note, things started to change for the team. That season was the season. We played harder. We played with so much passion, we ended up with a reputation for it. We were known for our heavy hits and high points.

But with heavy hits and high points came a healthy dose of testosterone. It was no secret in hockey—hell, in sports in general—that testosterone drove the game. And that team, that Beloit Enforcers team…?

The testosterone was high.

And it kept building—building, and building, and building. I couldn’t speak for the other guys, but for me? It kept building until it eventually erupted in what could only be explained as one thing—jealousy.

I shook my head, a faint grin tipping my lips.

It took a little time. It took some weeks and a few more side eyes, but eventually my future was drawn out.
