So while yes, I knew he had women, he’d always been kind enough to not flaunt them in front of me. Times changed though, and with the rumors swirling from The Rose and the looks I saw with my own two eyes...

Would this year be the year of the fiancée?

My heart cracked at the thought.

Ryan stood, and even with the bed and a few feet of floor between us, I could see the calculations in his eyes.

What was he thinking?

What was he picturing?

How he was going to formally introduce me to the love of his life?

Or maybe, he wouldn’t. Women didn’t take too kindly to female best friends.

Oh, God.

I was going to lose my best friend.

My heart started to race as fast as my thoughts, but not until after it felt like a vise tightened around the muscle.

It had been many years since I’d experienced a full-fledged anxiety attack and now was so not the time for this one.

“Savannah.”

This was my last time to spend any sort of time with my best friend.

I’d wasted so many years, being stupid and holding him at arm’s length.

So, so many years.

Now, not only was my heart racing, but my breathing had accelerated too.

“Sav.” His hands were on my shoulders and my eyes snapped up to his. When did he get right here?

“You’re all right, Sav. Just breathe. Slowly.”

And just like so many years ago, he brought me into his arms and ran a hand up and down my back slowly in a cadence I could mimic with my breaths. “Breathe, Savvy. You’re good.”

That crack in my heart was growing, but I was good at hardening myself.

I recovered from a major broken heart at twenty-one. I could push past this chipping away now, at twenty-four.

We stood like that for what had to be five minutes, before he stopped talking calming words to me, and instead went back to the previous conversation—something he never shied from.

“One, you’re beautiful, Savannah. Bella doesn’t hold a candle next to you.”

I scoffed and tried to push back from him, but he held tight.

“And two...I’m not with Bella.”
