Sailor

Iwalk into the office and dig into my back pocket for the check Mr. Studebaker gave me for this month’s lessons. I hand it over to Nona, and she rolls her eyes.

“How many times do I have to tell that man to pay right here in the office?”

“You make him nervous. He said he can’t turn down your muffins,” I explain. “And I don’t think he’s talking about the blueberry ones. He is a married man, you know?”

“Oh, my word, Sailor!”

I laugh and grab one of the brownies she brought today before propping against the counter. She types away on the keyboard, entering his payment into the system. When she finishes, she closes out that window, and her web page is back on display.

“Are you stalking Logan Decker?” I ask, my tone teasing.

Wynona glances up at her screen, and her cheeks turn a light shade of pink. She leans back in her chair and crosses her arms over her chest. “I suppose I don’t need to ‘stalk’ him, as you call it. I could just ask you. I do hear the two of you had a date at Phoebe’s.”

“Is that all the people of Coree Harbor have to talk about?”

“I think it’s wonderful you’re dating someone, especially someone like Logan Decker. Did you know he donated millions to the American Cancer Society? Started donating right after Hannah’s death. What a coincidence.”

My breath catches. He hasn’t mentioned her to me. Hasn’t behaved like he even remembers my sister. Why would he donate millions to a cancer charity?

“His bio is full of charitable work he’s done while playing for the NFL. You can’t find a negative story on the guy,” she boasts. “Well, except for one reporter claiming Logan chose to leave the NFL and that his injury wasn’t career-ending, but there doesn’t seem to be any validity to his claim.”

“Why would he say that?”

“Who?”

“The reporter.”

“Oh, he just says that Logan was having family issues and left the NFL of his own choosing. That his type of injury is one that a lot of other players have recovered from without issue. Who knows? It’s no secret that Jolene was definitely not a trophy wife, but I doubt he let her shenanigans drive him away from the NFL.”

No. He just let them drive him straight back to Coree Harbor.

“Are there a lot of stories on there about him and Jolene?”

I shouldn’t ask. If I want to know, I should simply ask Logan. When he first left town, I drowned myself in stories of him. I followed his college stats, watched his games, and even went to a game. But then, I stopped and rid myself of all things Logan Decker. I pushed him out of my mind and made every effort possible not to think of him, not to dream of him.

“A few. Mostly some photos of them attending some events together. A press statement about their separation.”

“Separation? What about their divorce?”

“I haven’t seen anything official on that yet and those busybodies, Margaret and Mildred, said rumor has it that their divorce isn’t even final.” Winona must recognize my concern because she quickly says, “But that doesn’t mean anything. Not every celebrity couple posts their divorce agreement on social media. And besides, Margaret and Mildred don’t know everything. They just like to gossip.”

I toss the half-eaten brownie into the garbage can, no longer in the mood for the sugary treat. When I know I’m about to be made a fool of, it makes me sick to my stomach. If those two old gossips are talking, there’s something to talk about.

Truth is, I don’t need to see their divorce agreement. I just need to know they’re actually divorced.
