The change in my routine is subtle, and I’m honestly surprised at how easily it comes to me. My nights are no longer spent looking for a one-night stand. They’re spent with Logan and Campbell. The animosity the teenager held toward me has dissipated, and the three of us carry on as though we’re a happy family, sharing meals and watching our favorite television shows together.

Family.

After I lost Hannah, I didn’t think I would have that again. Sure, I have my nephews, and Holden treats me like a sister, but that inner circle I had with her was gone. While it’s different with Logan and Campbell, it’s more than I ever dreamed I could have.

I didn’t realize how lonely my routine was before. How empty my place felt or how often I was truly by myself. How much I kept people out with the walls I’d built.

Logan Decker came in like a wrecking ball and destroyed all of my walls. Smashed them all to hell. And I haven’t bothered to take the time to lay new bricks.

“Your son is worse than you were when you were in high school,” I comment, grabbing another slice of pepperoni pizza. “We haven’t even had the first game of the season, and the cheerleaders are already fawning all over him.”

Logan glances over his shoulder to where Campbell, Liam, and Quinton are standing with a few other team members. Giggling cheerleaders surround them, being all touchy-feely with Campbell every chance they can get. Is it normal that this protective instinct has come over me, and I want to shoo them away? Tell him to enjoy being a teenager without the stress of having a girlfriend?

“He’s more like me than you know,” Logan replies. “Because he isn’t interested in any of those girls. He has a crush on Faith Thorpe. She plays the flute and is the president of the book club.”

“Aw! Please tell me she’s a nerd. An adorable, completely-unaware-of-how-cute-she-is-nerd.”

“According to Campbell, she doesn’t like all that girly stuff all the other girls do. You think that’s a good sign?”

I smile over at him. “I certainly hope so. But I have to say I’m shocked he even told you about her.”

“Are you kidding? I’m shocked that you’re shocked.” I roll my eyes, and he laughs. “Okay, fine. I heard him talking to one of the guys about her, so I asked. Kind of forced him to tell me. He’s supposed to invite her to the game Friday night.”

“Speaking of the game, I don’t recall being asked to attend yet. Suppose I can make other plans…”

He knows I’m only teasing. There’s no way I would miss the game. In fact, I already promised his parents I would sit with them.

“That’s too bad. If you’re not there, I’m not there, and who the hell is going to coach the team? Can’t leave that up to Robbie and Wade.”

“Fine,” I concede. “I guess I’ll be there. Besides, I wouldn’t let Campbell down.”

We finish up the pizza and listen to Campbell give his pitch on why he should be allowed to sleep over at Liam and Quinton’s house on a school night. The three of them beg a good two minutes before Logan gives in.

“You gave in fairly quick,” I joke as we get into his truck. “Thought we were going to watch Arrow together.”

Holy cow. Did I seriously just say that?

“Because I have something in mind that I want to do, and it doesn’t include a teenager or a masked man in a green hood.”
