Itake a sip of my beer and flip through the pages of my notes. My assistant coaches and former schoolmates, Wade and Robbie, are seated across from me. Their focus is not quite on finalizing the team, though, as their eyes roam around the place.

“There she is,” Wade says. “Weren’t you asking about Candy?”

Candy hasn’t shown back up for tryouts. Instead, Quinton and Liam’s dad have brought them. Still feeling like we somehow got off on the wrong foot, I asked about her around town. Can’t say I got the warmest reception in doing so, but I’m determined to figure out why Candy has an issue with me. Maybe she read some unflattering article and is passing judgment. I just want to clear things up.

I look to where Wade is indicating and shake my head. “That’s not Candy.”

The woman he’s referring to is a blonde, busty, and quite honestly, not my type in the slightest. She has desperation written all over her face. My Candy is definitely not desperate.

“I’m telling you, that’s the only Candy in Coree Harbor.”

“Well, you’re wrong because that’s not the Candy I met,” I argue and scan the room. “That is the Candy I met.”

She’s here and seated at the bar with a burger plate and beer in front of her, chatting with Phoebe Wolfe, the owner. I’ve had my nose buried so far in my notes that I didn’t notice her.

Wade bursts out laughing. “Hate to break it to you, but her name isn’t Candy. That’s Sailor Leigh.”

I nearly choke on my beer, spewing a bit of it out onto the table and dampening my notebook. I cough and clear my throat, grabbing a napkin to clean up my mess.

“That’s Sailor? From high school?”

Robbie grins. “Yep. Wonder why she told you her name was Candy.”

The two of them have a laugh at my expense. I know exactly why she did that, though. I had introduced myself to her as though I have never laid eyes on her. As though my lips haven’t touched hers before. As though I didn’t tell her I loved her.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks. You’re different than all that. I love you.

We were kids, teenagers, and damn it if I didn’t think that summer was going to last forever. Fate had other plans for me, though, and he’s almost sixteen years old now.

“No telling,” I mutter.

“Well, what the hell are you waiting for? She’s right there,” Robbie says. “You wait too long, and she’ll leave with someone else.”

I cock an eyebrow at him. “What are you talking about?”

“Sailor is not the shy, nerdy girl we knew in high school. She may not be Candy, but she can almost give her a run for her money.”

“It’s kind of early still,” Wade says. “So, you may have a shot.”

Jesus.I close my notebook up and finish off the last bit of my beer before sliding out of the booth. I toss some money onto the table and tell Wade and Robbie we’ll finish selecting the team tomorrow.

Right now, I need to go find out what in the hell happened to the girl I once knew.
