Holdin’ it all taegether

(Liam)

Naisha said, “You’re in a foul mood, what’s that about?”

I had become irritated that the bucket wouldna move away and shoved it, splashin’ muddy slop water all over the bottom of my pants leg and my boot.

“Up all night talkin’ tae people, nae one in Scotland understands how time zones work.”

“Everything cool back home?”

“Nae, come tae find out, I am the only person holdin’ it all taegether.”

She chuckled. “You’re the one holding it together, the proud owner of the Och Nae Pub? I just watched you fight a bucket and lose.”

I wiped the mop back and forth across the last part of the floor, dropped it into the bucket, and pushed it toward the back. I shoved the door open with m’shoulder against a gusting wind and fought tae keep it open long enough tae slop the water out tae the grass.

I returned tae the bar.

Naisha said, “First the rain, now this big storm, I feel terrible for all the hikers out there right now.”

“Aye.”

“Have you heard anything from that woman?”

“Who?” I popped the top off a Tennent’s beer bottle. “Woodshee?”

She chuckled. “Yeah, you know who I’m talking about. Pink backpack fancy-boots lady. Heard anything?”

“Nae, but I daena ken why I would.” I took a swig of my beer. “What ye think she is doing in this storm?”

“Well, she ain’t out in it, you can be sure of that. She’s gotten a hotel by now. Probably five miles up the road. One of your competitors. A hotel with employees. Maybe even a pool.”

I jokingly clutched my chest. “Och, yer words cut deep, Naisha. A competitor’s hotel? Woodshee would go tae a competitor’s hotel?”

She laughed. “Of course she would. You are a hottie, don’t get me wrong, but a lady like that...? She’s gone to a hotel that has stars, instead of bad Yelp reviews.”

“Aye, I’m sure ye’re right about it.” I raised my beer bottle tae her and then took a swig.
