I muttered, “You’re stupid.”
“Yeah maybe, I mean, I know it’s only been like thirty-six hours, but you’re being very sad about it. I don’t remember you being so sad about Darren.”
I ate a big bite of yogurt and spoke with my mouth full. “Darren was a slo-mo train wreck that I watched happen for years. I locked down the accounts. I separated some of our assets. I didn’t know why, but it just seemed ‘safer’. There was something I could sense. My senses are really good, you know. I’m a great judge of character, notwithstanding my ex-husband.”
I ate another spoonful and put down the cup. “That’s the thing, I’m a good judge of character. I do things that seem crazy, but I follow my gut and it rarely lets me down — like the hike. You told me I was crazy. Well, guess what? Crazy like the smartest guy at a Mensa festival — do they have Mensa festivals?”
“Probably, and on costume day they all wear NPR puzzle-master lapel pins.”
“Ha, that’s funny.”
“I made you laugh.”
“Briefly. But... the hike was one of the best things I ever did. And on top of it Liam was the most important person I ever met.”
She frowned. “But, Blakely, are you going to throw away your career, your house, your friends, your whole life for him?”
I shook my head.
“Yeah, let’s make you really beautiful. Darren can eat his heart out, and when all is said and done, you will have this beautiful dress—”
“The dress is my prize for being forced to go to an event where I have to stand beside my ex, while celebrating his former mistress?”
“No, your prize is the millions of dollars you are about to gain, the dress is just a consolation prize for the next few hours, and hey, maybe a hottie in a tux will sidle up and whisper sweetnesses in your ear. And tomorrow we can pig out on carbs, remember how much you love carbs?”
“God I love carbs so much, so so so much.”
“We’ll eat cookie dough and talk about your future plan.”
I let her lead me over to get my hair and make up done.
