Briar

Iwake up in a bed, a large one. It’s not my own. Oh yeah, I’m at Kingston’s house. This is his bed, I assume since it’s the master bedroom he showed us yesterday.

He’s not here, so where did he sleep? Did we sleep together? I don’t think so. I fell asleep before the movie ended, like always.

I roll out of the comfy bed and stretch. I walk into the bathroom and see a toothbrush left out for me. I unwrap it and begin to scrub morning breath away. I run my fingers through my hair trying to tame it a little bit and then pad downstairs.

I hear Kingston and Thorn in the kitchen talking, so I stop. Yeah, I’m eavesdropping.

I hear my brother say morning and then a bunch of things rattling around.

“Dammit, Thorn you scared the shit out of me,” I hear Kingston say.

“My bad. A big bad fighter like you, scared?” Thorn laughs and King joins in.

I put my hand over my mouth to contain my giggles so they won’t hear me.

Things get muffled after that. I hear my name and Disney.

They’re planning a trip to Disney for me?

King is too sweet.

Once I hear the beep for the coffee maker signaling coffee is done, I shuffle down the rest of the stairs.

I love coffee. Coffee is life.

Right before I enter, I hear Thorn say King is awesome.

I feel tears spring to my eyes and I stop, taking a moment to get myself together.

No one has ever been this nice to us without wanting something from me in return. No one since Lennon, but Kingston is different, although it still makes me a little apprehensive. Does he have a motive? Will he hurt me? Will he walk out on us if he knew the truth?

I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m just going to go with the flow for right now.

“Morning,” I paste a smile on my face as I walk into the kitchen.

I walk over to my brother, kiss his cheek and ruffle his hair.

“Come on, Briar,” he whines, “I’m not a little kid.”

I laugh, “You’ll always be my little brother.”

He glares at me as I chuckle.

“Is coffee ready?” I ask and Kingston holds out a cup as if he was expecting the question.

“Thank you,” I take a seat on one of the stools next to Thorn.

“What are your plans today, boys?”

“Train.”

“Get my ass kicked.” They both say at the same time.

I can’t help but laugh.

It was kind of cute.
