Ice blue. Like the color of the water in the images I’d seen of beaches of the Caribbean. Of the daytime skies, without a cloud to mar the brilliant blue. His gaze captured me. Consumed me. I almost forgot the steel pressing into my head. Almost, but not quite.

I took a deep breath. Be like Kira. Be strong. Don’t let them break you.

My chest rattled slightly as his gaze burned into mine, his blue eyes cold and unyielding.

“My name is Ryder. What’s your name, human?” he began, his tone low and masculine and my thighs quivered at the power in it.

“Alaina Stryke,” I whispered softly.

“Kira Stryke’s sister,” Davon piped up and I sneered in his direction.

“You let them know where we were, didn’t you?” I asked, sliding my eyes toward my former captive. He grinned, and I knew he had.

Stupid. I shouldn’t have let him turn on his headpiece.

Ryder pulled my hair, forcing me to look back at him.

“That rebel’s sister? Interesting,” he mused.

“You know my sister?” I asked hopefully.

“I do. We all do. Her capture was major news. She was on the most wanted list for a long time, but now to find out she has a sister. Hmmm… Commander Nix will want to know this right away. He’ll want to meet you personally, I bet,” Ryder replied.

“He’ll want to know she was punished,” one of the others said.

“You’re right, Morgn. We’ll have to teach this human a lesson about abiding by Vakarran law, won’t we?” Ryder said.

Morgn glared in my direction, his gaze hungry and dark, like a wolf about to ambush its prey. I shivered.

I swallowed and found a pit of courage somewhere within me. They wouldn’t break me. I’d kill them first. I’d kill them in cold blood, just like Kira would. I could do that, right?

I sneered back at him and I could have sworn his eyes lit up with the challenge.

“I think she’s one of those abnormal humans. She’ll need more unique methods to fully train her,” the last one said.

“Probably, Aarom,” Morgn replied.

“Are there any more of you?” I asked, as bravely as I could.

“Nope. Just the four of us. Think you can handle that?” Ryder asked. My gaze went from one to the other, before it finally returned to him. A scar mangled the right side of his face and at seeing him up close, I realized he was probably the eldest of the group. My intuition about Davon being young was likely correct.

Ryder’s jawline was strong, chiseled, and alluring. His grip was strong, and I could tell he was well muscled beneath his combat gear. All of them were. Ryder’s blue eyes studied mine and I could feel him judging me, analyzing my behavior.

“There’s no mention of you in the human database,” he said softly.

“No. There isn’t,” I replied firmly. I’d never been captured before. I’d never been this close to a Vakarran nor had I ever had one touch me. I could feel my nipples harden underneath my shirt and I had trouble understanding why.

Arousal? Fear? A mixture of both? I didn’t know. I tried not to think about the first option. The gun pushed harder against my scalp and I gasped at the pain.

His irises glowed, brighter than ever as he searched my eyes. I wondered what he was doing to me, what he was trying to figure out. Davon, Aarom, and Morgn all moved closer and I glanced in their direction. Davon was smaller than the others, shorter by a little bit and lankier. Out of the four, Ryder was the largest, but both Morgn and Aarom were sizable men as well. All of them though were at least a foot taller than me.

Their skin, the color of a hearty dark merlot, rippled in the sunlight.

If they weren’t my mortal enemy, I would have thought them to be attractive.

What the actual fuck? Why had I just thought that?

I lifted my chin, feigning courage and ignoring my wayward thoughts. I had to focus on how to get out of here right now.
