“I was just supposed to flirt with you to get you to agree to being the model for the big campaign, and here I am, your pregnant wife.”

“So you did have an agenda?” He howls with laughter as I tell him that my plan worked.

“Truthfully, I didn’t. I mean, I was incredibly attracted to you. Who wouldn’t be? The only time I tried to get you to do what I wanted was when I stopped by your house to show you my plan, and then you got all annoyed when I had you try on different outfits, so I said I’d get Trent to do it.”

“You think I didn’t know that?” He has that devilish grin on his face, the one that tells me if we weren’t dancing in a room full of people we know right now, he’d have me bent in all sorts of different positions.

“Is that why you agreed to do it?”

He smooths my hair out of my face and brings us to a stop on the dance floor. “Sweetheart, I agreed to all of it just so I could spend time around you. That’s the bottom line: I was head over heels the moment I saw those cherry red lips at the Fall Fest.”

“Makes you think that maybe we could’ve saved ourselves some heartache and headaches if we’d just said that from day one.”

“Nah, it was all part of the fun to chase after you. You ready to go see what’s inside that envelope with everyone else?”

I rest my forehead against his chest for a brief moment. “Yes, but I want to savor these last few seconds of just the three of us in our tiny little bubble.”

The moment Tyler was shot, it was like a light went off in my head. I realized just how much I wanted this baby—how excited I was to raise a little piece of Tyler and me together in this world. All those made-up scenarios and fears I was fixated on went out the window when my maternal instincts kicked in along with this insatiable desire to protect my family.

We walk back to our table and Tyler grabs the microphone as we take a seat.

“I know this is a little unconventional to have the groom give a toast at his own wedding, but I first want to thank everyone for being here and celebrating our love today. I also want to say that I never want to take any of you for granted. Mr. and Mrs. Dyer, you raised an incredible woman. She should be the blueprint. She’s the epitome of kindness and selflessness, of love and goodness. So thank you for raising such an amazing woman and for allowing me to be her husband.”

He raises his glass toward my parents and everyone claps.

“I do have one more thing, and this is something I want to tell my wife. It’s something I’ve been dying to tell her, because while we made a promise that we were going to be surprised by this . . . babe, I opened the envelope that night we got home. I just didn’t tell you.”

Everyone is looking at each other in confusion. I feel my jaw go slack at Tyler’s confession, and it makes me burst into laughter.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Ranger mumbles to Tyler’s right.

“It’s a girl,” Tyler says, looking at me.

The room is dead silent.

“It’s a—we’re having a girl?” I repeat, and he nods.

“There’s an envelope in the center of each table. Go ahead and open them up,” Tyler says, referring to the sonogram picture we secretly placed at each table.

He drops the microphone and picks me up. I throw my arms around his neck and bury my face in him as I repeat over and over again, “We’re having a girl!”
