ChapterTwo

My vision gets hazy and I have to lean against the house to keep me steady. Ed’s words echo in my mind.

“Your dad has been kidnapped.”

“What?” I manage to squeak out. My mind is trying to process everything from Ed’s torn clothes to Dad being gone.

“He was kidnapped.” He repeats, annoyance evident in his tone.

“Okay, I heard you, but my mind is trying to play catch up. I don’t understand. How was he kidnapped?”

He takes a deep breath in through his nose before exhaling out of his mouth. “We were on our way back after delivering the package and we were ambushed. We tried to fight but it was no use.”

No! This can’t be happening. I can’t lose another parent.

I look up when I hear a car door shut. It is Gavin getting out of his luxurious sports car. “You called for help?”

Looking over at Ed, I see that he seems relieved.

He nods enthusiastically. “Yes. Please help us.”

Gavin walks over to the two of us and leans against the house, mimicking my position. “What seems to be the problem?”

“No. Absolutely not.” I shake my head. “I will handle this.”

Ed places his hand on my shoulder like Dad used to always do. “Arabella, we could use a strapping young man like Gavin. No offense to you, but if your dad and I couldn’t do it, then neither can you.”

Gavin beams with pride. “Thank you, sir. I will gladly help in any way I can, but uh, yeah that was a little offensive.”

I don’t want to stand around here while Dad is missing. His kidnappers could be torturing him right this second or even worse he could be dead and I don’t want to spend these precious moments debating whether what Ed said was offensive or not. My ego isn’t affected one way or the other.

“I’m going to go get Dad.”

Pushing off of the brick wall, I head to the front door. I need to grab my wallet and keys. Driving will be faster than walking.

Ed and Gavin follow me inside, stopping just inside the tiny foyer when I turn around to face them.

I wait for them to say something, but neither one of them speaks. “What are you two doing?”

Ed speaks first. “I’m coming with you.”

I roll my eyes and shake my head. “No way.”

He looks like he barely escaped the first time. He needs to go home, change, and file a police report.

He protests. “But I’m the only one that knows where he is being held.”

“There’s only one road that leads out of this town. I will follow it until I find Dad.” Nothing he or Gavin say will stop me.

He steps forward and raises his arms with his palms facing the ceiling. “That’s crazy!”

I shrug. There’s nothing else I can do. I refuse to bring Ed with me looking the way he does.

Gavin clears his throat and looks my way. “I can go save him….” He trails off.

Since when does he do anything for anyone other than himself? I smell a trap but entertain him for another moment.

He waits until I raise my eyebrow before continuing, “If you agree to be my wife.”
