Looking around, I see many dead rose bushes, hundreds if I had to wager a guess.

Is this why Dad has been kidnapped? Because of those beautiful, enchanting roses? Is Dad the one that has killed these rose bushes? How could he do this? This looks like it would take years to destroy. Has Dad been stealing these roses for years?

Even if that is the case, that is no reason to attack Ed and kidnap Dad. Angrily, I stalk back to the wooden front door.

“Open up!” I yell and bang my balled-up fist on the door.

The door creaks open. Did I break the doorknob? Was it even locked in the first place?

Opening the door wider, I am caught off guard at how dark it is inside.

What kind of rich family has such a dark and dreary house? Why is it so cold in here?

I have to wait several minutes for my eyes to adjust to the darkness.

This is the complete opposite of Gavin’s house. Even though he is an arrogant ass, his family’s house is warm and welcoming.

I walk to the right and find the living room. There is large, oversized furniture that is collecting dust here.

“Hello?” I call out, hoping to find the owner of the house.

Should I continue exploring? Should I invade his privacy? If Dad is somewhere here, I need to find him.

I am too angry to care about some kidnappers' privacy.

Continuing on my walk, I leave the living room and head past the front door, wondering if I should leave while I am ahead or if I have a flashlight in my glove box that will make it easier for me to see.

The room to the left of the front door is littered with boxes and dust. Making my way through another doorway, I see a long elegant formal dining room table. The white satin linens are still stretched across.

Do they use this room, but not the other two?

I walk up the double-wide staircase and get lost a few times. Something common everywhere I go in this deserted castle is that there are lots of cobwebs.

If someone does live here, they need to hire a cleaner.

A deep voice booms behind me. “What are you doing here?”

Turning around I let out a loud gasp as I stare at a tall beast. He’s hairy. His entire body is covered in golden brown fur.

Looking closer, I see that he resembles a grizzly bear but is hairier and meaner looking.

My gaze works its way up to his face. It is also covered in fur and-

Does he have a snout?

No, no, no. This can’t be real. A bear beast thing can’t talk, only humans can.

“I asked what you are doing here. Don’t make me ask a third time.” He growls out.

“Wh-Wha-What are you?” I stutter.

Can this really be happening? Can the monsters I read about in my novels actually exist?

“Answer me first.” He slams his fist against the stone wall, making the room shake.

My voice is small and shaky. “I am looking for my dad. I was told he was kidnapped here.”

“Ah, yes.” His tone holds no emotion whatsoever.
