“I don’t know where he is, man, I don’t.” I straighten up, getting ready to give him a little preview of what he’s going to be receiving. “But wait—wait! I know he has some places he goes!” I lift an eyebrow, gesturing for him to continue. “There’s a club called Vino—he owns it, but it’s not a public place. It’s for his close friends, and only people he knows get in. I’ve never been invited, but I know he hides out there when shit’s going down.”

“See, was that so damn hard?” I ask, just as my cell rings. I hold up a finger to my lips and he nods, agreeing to stay silent. He’d probably give me anything at this point. “Yeah?” I’m still using a burner phone, and only select people have the number. Ford is one of those people.

“It’s James, Stokes.”

I lift my head in surprise. “James? I thought you were laid up?”

“I was, just got out, but listen, I got word.” She releases a breath, and I tense, waiting for whatever bomb she’s going to drop.

“What?” I snap. It’s never good when the FBI willingly contacts me and it’s not for my immediate arrest.

“Ford—he’s not answering. We also don’t know where he took Margaret.”

I know this. I knew Ford wasn’t going to give it away to anyone and would only come out of hiding when he got word from me that Anton was done for. “I know. You’re not supposed to know where he is.”

A sigh comes through the phone. James has always been a bit of a control freak, someone who doesn’t like to be left out of the loop. “Stokes, you don’t understand. He activated a warning signal.”

My chest constricts at the uneasy feeling that courses through me. “What do you mean? That’s for emergencies. It has to be a mistake.” Even I can hear the panic in my voice.

“I know. I’m afraid he’s in trouble.”

Fear, anger, and confusion all fight for dominance inside me. I want to scream, I want to hurt, I want to find her and never let her go.
