And just like that, my body heated like it had in the barn. I could feel an insistent pressure on the inside of my lip, a sure indication that my fangs wanted to descend.

“Cedra?” Twyla’s voice was hesitant. “It’s starting to smell really good again. Like warm spice and sweet smoke...” She trailed off, her eyes glazing over.

“I can’t help it.” Even to me, my voice sounded strangled. “You’re so damned perfect.”

“Oh...” She seemed surprised and pleased by my statement. “Me? Uh, th-thank you.”

Then I sighed. “You’d better head upstairs first. I need a breather.”

“Okay.”

Was there a note of disappointment in her voice?

She hesitated before taking a few steps towards me, chin tilted upwards so she could meet my eyes. Again, I marveled at how perfectly proportioned she was for me. All she needed to do was lean forward to tuck her head against my neck.

Her fingers sought mine in a soft caress. Her skin was silky smooth against the rough edges of my palms.

“Cedra, if you need something, all you have to do is ask.”

It was a proposition—bold, loud and clear. Her eyes searched mine, full of promise and longing. Her lips quivered expectantly.

Oh, so much longing.

And she thought I could let her walk away after that?

She only managed to take one step before I pulled her back against me like I’d done the night before. It boggled my mind that I was so familiar with her already, yet we’d only met a little over a day ago.

“And what would you do if I asked you for exactly what I needed, ’mara?”

My voice was quiet, my hold on her firm but gentle.

It was in that moment I realized what that pounding in my head was...it was her heartbeat.
