At the thought of her scent, a tingle spread from my core, awakening the rest of my body.

For the past few days, I’d tried to find a position that wouldn’t overheat my swollen sex. But it was no use. The arousal was always there, like a little blinking red light at the back of my brain.

I’d promised myself I wasn’t going to ask Cedra for anything—I just couldn’t. Being pushed away twice, no, three times, was enough.

That was my embarrassment quota—no more!

I groaned and flopped onto my back, looking out at the green fields shimmering in the wind in front of me. Just four nights ago, I’d been standing on the balcony of my bedroom, looking out into the stars feeling helpless, voiceless and so alone.

Now I stretched out as much as the mattress would allow, looking up at the darkening sky with the same glinting stars and the same hovering clouds, waiting for those feelings to come slithering back again.

But they weren’t as intense anymore. It felt as though they were the worries of a different person, or perhaps a past life. Three hours’ journey away from home, with no family and not a single cent to my name, I felt...free. Empowered. Hopeful. The cocktail of loneliness and helplessness that had closed around me in my parents’ home now felt like nothing but a soft shadow.

I didn’t need my father’s money or my mother’s connections to be happy. I was smart—I’d find my way in this world. After all, I’d completed all the household chores by myself these past few days with minimal instruction from Ella. Cooking, cleaning, laundry...

Now, if only I could just be empowered enough to tend to the needs of my body.

With a sigh, I lay on my back a little while longer, counting each Star that seemed to shine brighter than before. The sensation in my chest was so odd—the easy breaths, the disappearing tightness—and I took a second to luxuriate in the new feeling.

There was not much else to do today. Dinner was waiting for us in a pot, and the house was spotless. I turned on the mattress, spying the long, silky party dress I’d hung up that first morning.

It would have looked beautiful on a stately woman with a small chest and lean stomach. The web-thin straps would accentuate a sharp set of collarbones. But on me? The long, elegant dress would drag on the floor like I was a child playing dress-up in my mother’s clothes.

I eyed the yards of silk, flirting with an idea.

I’d noticed the way Cedra had watched my bare legs that morning in the barn. She’d looked entranced. And when her fingers had trailed up my thighs, I hadn’t missed the way her shoulders had trembled.

Led by the ache in my core, I got to my feet, mentally snipping away at the hemline until I had a piece of fabric that resembled lingerie.

A small smile twisted my lips.

Did I dare tease her that way?

The answer was a resounding yes.
