Fear certainly wasn’t working. She imagined Boone and Niko could torture what they wanted out of him, but she wasn’t going to let them take that step.
Torture might, but she wasn’t going to let any Therian take that step. Her decision didn’t come from any sympathy for the human. Terrence Ball’s life meant nothing to her, except for the closure his death would bring to Niko and his pack, and to herself, because she’d respected Jameson Whelan.
She wanted Ball dead but she wouldn’t let anybody torture him for his secrets.
Torture crossed a line. Cross it too many times and it fractured things that could never be fixed.
Zee knew about living with cracks in her psyche. She didn’t wish it on anybody.
Please... don’t let this fracture me all over again.
Instinct had her kneel, reach out.
She had a snarl behind her—Niko.
Then, voice still raspy, came Saint’s voice. “Don’t. She’s... ” Saint paused, his words strained.
She hadn’t realized he’d regained consciousness, although by the unsteadiness in his breathing, in his words, he was fighting to hold on.
“Let her work,” Saint finished.
She could feel Niko’s frustration, feel his need to haul her away from Ball. But he didn’t.
Touching her fingers to the human’s jaw, she said, “Look at me.”
Ball’s eyes widened.
“Fae,” he whispered. “I forgot you were part Fae. I can’t look into your eyes. You can... ” He closed his eyes and laughed softly. “It’s too late. You’re in me now.”
His giggle was discordantly sharp, echoing around them, far too loud.
Zee’s concentration started wavering. Her wolf pressed against her—she could almost feel the warm, silken brush of fur, pushing against her calf to steady her, giving strength as Zee fought to steady this part of herself she’d never dared explore.
“Tell me your secrets,” she said.
“Secrets?”
“Yes.” She skimmed her fingers up his jawline, then back down. “You said Therians wanted the subjugation of humans—if that’s what you believe, then you must have a plan. Will Humans First try to stop us?”
