Every muscle in his body looked to be quivering as Phoenix stood there in a clearly submissive stance.
Wrong... wrong... wrong...
The warning bell going off in Niko’s head was loud enough to deafen him.
“Prime, I beg you not to force Zee to shift. Please.”
The warning bell was no longer a bell, but a fucking gong, the words from Phoenix a punch in the gut so shocking, so out of character, Niko could do nothing but stare for long seconds. Finally, he managed to speak, but the words resembled nothing human.
“Phoenix, what the fuck is going on?”
The older man’s lids flickered and his gaze bounced away from Niko’s. A muscle twitched in his jaw as he forced the words out. “I can’t tell you, Prime.”
“Phoenix... ”
“I can’t. She’d never forgive me—or you. But if you force a shift on her, whatever has kept her sane and whole the past ten years is probably going to shatter, permanently. You might as well just rip her heart out in truth instead of just figuratively and get it over with. She’ll be dead regardless.” He hesitated a moment before adding, “You already know there are some fucked up packs out there. Greylock was one of the worst and there was shit that happened before your father went in and cleaned house, but even he didn’t know the worst of it. You... please. Don’t do this.”
