Chapter Fifteen

Zee felt battered, bruised and deliciously... empty. That might not seem like a good thing to some, but she’d spent too much time filled, too bursting with a raw sexual hunger and the starved instincts of her wolf. Now she felt at peace, drained of the urges fueled by her Fae self and the prowling wolf within. Her mind, too, was blissfully numb and for the time being, she was happy to let it stay that way.

The hot shower, breakfast and coffee at the hotel had threatened to clear her head, but she hadn’t really fought hard to clear the fog and now, after driving through a persistent downpour for more than three hours, she was happily drifting in a comfortable haze where her thoughts were as insubstantial as cotton candy.

Mostly, she kept reliving the past night.

As long as she focused on just the physical, those thoughts were pleasant—okay, more than pleasant thoughts. After a while, she was positive she’d had some weird, experimental transfusion where her blood had been replaced with a warm, exotic liqueur, one that flowed thick and sweet as syrup through her veins. At some point, her clitoris began to beat in time with her pulse and she pressed her thighs together to ease the ache.

“Zee.”

She stirred at the sound of Niko’s voice, rough as gravel yet somehow silken like a velvet glove.

“Hmm?” Turning her head on the padded rest behind her, she looked at him through heavy-lidded lashes.

The car stopped moving.

She frowned and straightened in the car, looking around. That one look had some of the fog in her head drawing back. Niko put a hand on her leg though, and the pulsating want in her belly grew savage claws and teeth.

He squeezed gently.

“Look at me.”

She was—she was staring at his hand on her knee and thinking that if he just moved it upward...

“Zee.”

That tone of authority had her wanting to snarl. She’d been on her own a long time and she hadn’t given anybody the impression they had authority over her. The wolf bared its teeth in agreement. Even when she’d been with this man, it had been because she’d wanted him—not because he had any sort of authority over her. Her wolf was too strong in its own right to easily cede to the command in his voice—not to mention how he’d abused any right he might have had over her.

Being a Prime, being Alpha, being dominant came with responsibility and one part of that was taking care of those who weren’t as strong.

Niko had failed her, had failed her wolf. And they weren’t ready to forgive him.

Through sheer will, she managed to throttle her primal instincts and focused on his face.

“What?” she asked in a cool voice.

Something about her tone had Niko inclining his head to study her with speculation, although she had no idea what he was expecting to find. When his thumb began to stroke over her skin in slow, smooth strokes, she gripped his wrist and nudged it away.

That made him go still and she sensed as much as saw as his own beast stirred and began to rise.

The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, but she didn’t break eye contact.

“Is it hands-off now?” he asked in a calm tone.

“We’re not in bed so I don’t see the point.”

His lids drooped, giving him a deceptively sleepy-eyed look. “You’re a wolf. Touch is part of who you are.”

“I’ve never been a normal wolf. I learned a long time ago to go without touches most Therians take for granted. The past ten years only added to that.”

Something flashed in his eyes, but it was hidden behind a mask of calm too quick for her to decipher.

Not wanting to think about it, she looked forward and focused on the terrain around them, although the hard, driving rain made it difficult, even for the keen eyes of Therian wolves. “Is there a reason we’re parked on the side of the road?”

“We’re less than twenty miles from our territorial borders.”

The words sank into her conscious, taking root. Slowly, she blinked and looked back out the windshield before glancing out the passenger window. “I see. And where to after that?”
