“These secrets about Greylock... Why did you never speak to me about them?”

He gripped the sides of her chair as he hunkered in front of her, so close his chest brushed her knees. Through the thin material of her jumpsuit, she could feel his heat and it reached those icy places within, warming them once more.

But the cold had spread and even the fire that was Niko couldn’t warm her.

The secrets about her life before him... those were secrets she never wanted to share with anybody. Not even with him. Especially not with him.

Fortunately, she had a good answer for this particular question.

“You do realize you never asked, right?”

Eyes narrowing slightly, he studied her, a flicker of the roiling power he held inside showing in the depths of his blue gaze. But after a moment, he smiled. It wasn’t a smile of humor though. It was one her wolf recognized—the smile of a predator who’d just caught his prey’s scent. Her hackles instinctively rose at the thought, even as she fought to keep her expression calm and her physical reactions under control.

“And if I ask now?” he queried gently.

“I’d remind you that you have no right to ask anything of me.” Giving him a cool look, she glanced at her plate, then at the ornate clock on the wall. “Did you ask me here to eat before the wake or to give me the inquisition?”
