“I don’t need a bodyguard.” She bared her teeth at him. “I’ve lived a decade on my own.”

“Not on Therian lands. To many, you’re an unknown dominant. You know what that could lead to. So unless you wish to open the mourning ceremony with an official induction into the pack... ” He gave her a charming smile. “We could introduce you as my mate, if you like.”

“Or... ” She smiled sweetly. “We could make it a double mourning ceremony—for my father and you.”

“Ouch.” He placed a hand over his heart. “You wound me, Zee.”

She rolled her eyes, but he thought he caught a flicker of a smile.

Pressing his advantage, he moved closer. “Tell me you won’t fight the escort.”

“Fine.” She huffed out a breath. “But only for this. You can spread word that I’ll be in the region for another day or two. Unknown dominant or not, with your permission, I’m allowed to roam the territory without some looming shadow at my side once you’ve made your people aware—and they won’t disobey a direct order from you.” She jabbed a finger in his direction. “I’ll allow this tonight because there’s no time to spread the news and there are other concerns at hand. But tonight is your only free pass.”

“Understood.” He stroked his fingers down her neck. “You won’t be without friends tonight. Boone got word to me just before I came down for dinner. Meridia requested permission to attend.”

“I... what?” Her eyes widened, shock causing the pupils to flare until just a thin rim of green showed.

“You heard me. My gut instinct was to say no—but I approved the request. Of course, had I known she had interest in sharing your bed, I might have decided otherwise.” Smile grim, he added, “She’s rather protective of you, isn’t she?”

“Meridia loves fiercely.” A gentle warmth colored the words, her face softening. “Finding my way to her territory has been one of the truest blessings of my life.”
