He gave a short nod, then turned to the man at his side. Boone, she thought. She hadn't seen him since her return, but she recognized the man who'd been his best friend ten years ago.

Boone met her gaze briefly, gave a small smile before directing his attention to the Prime.

“Escort Melanie from the big house. I think she's done paying her... respects.”

Melanie didn't say anything else, didn't look up from the ground as Boone stepped aside and gestured for her to lead the way.

As she crossed the grounds, Niko stepped toward her.

With everybody watching, he took her hand and lifted it to his lips. Her heart fluttered as he kissed the back of it. It wasn't anything that could be called possessive, but there was a tenderness to the gesture and it made an ache settle in her chest. As he lowered her hand, he met Shale's eyes.

“Watch over her.”

Shale gave a deep nod.

Nobody spoke as Niko returned to his position by the memorial that had been placed in honor of Samuel Day.
