No, not just special. Something vital.

But why he seemed so enraptured by her eyes, she didn’t know. And she couldn’t even ask him, either, because a heartbeat later, his mouth was on hers, one hand still tangled in the wet skeins of her hair, while he slid his other arm around her and held on tight, his overheated—naked—body a brand against hers.

Gia gasped against his lips, her mouth opening, first in shock, then in dazed, desperate hunger as he licked at her lips, then stroked into her mouth, the taste of him smoky and wild, every wicked temptation she’d ever dreamed of.

Reaching up, she caught hold of his biceps, her mind spinning and her heart racing.

Deep inside, in the very core of her, she heard a whisper—Look at me. Let me see you one last time.

SORIN HAD SPENT THEpast four centuries desperately alone.

All those years ago, when he’d buried Adela, he’d known what stretched out in front of him. Emptiness. Nothing but emptiness.

In all the time since he’d laid her to rest, he’d never once looked into another’s eyes and felt her staring back at him. He’d never dared think it could happen—he’d caused her death. How could he ever hope she’d find her way back?

It was his own idiocy and arrogance that decided his fate—and Adela’s. Even if the Vâlva hadn’t cursed him, he would have been alone—would remain alone, because there would never be another who could lay claim to his heart.

It had taken centuries to find her and only a year to lose her.

He’d known it would take millennia to forget her—more. An eternity, at least.

But then he’d looked into the face of a witchling Fae. With her bravery and brashness, he might have been attracted to her, enough, even, that he might have considered a sexual relationship for however long it took to get the need out of his system.

Then her eyes met his.

Adela’s eyes—it wasn’t the color, or even the shape.

But he knew when his love was staring at him, even if she didn’t recognize him.

The impact of her gaze had shaken him to the soles of his feet while his heart took flight.

He’d been unable to resist the urge to touch her, to taste her.

And when she bit his lip in sharp reproof, he accepted the small punishment, falling back a few feet with his hands up, a quiescent look on his face.

“Stay back,” she said, her eyes narrowed. “Stay the hell back.”

“Of course.”

“Of course.” Her green eyes sparked hot with fury as she parroted his words, then sneered. “Aren’t you the gentleman? Naked as the day you were born and putting your hands on me, but now you’re acting all polite.”

“There’s nothing to be done about my lack of clothes, witchling. I was asleep when I sensed something strange taking place—and being a dragon, I prefer to fly over any other form of travel. Dragons don’t wear clothes. If this...” He shrugged and glanced down to indicate his naked body. “Makes you uncomfortable, I apologize.”

“I’ve been alive more than a century—and I’ve haven’t spent all of it in America. A bunch of fucking prudes, these people.” She gave a disdainful sniff.

But her cheeks were pink and Sorin couldn’t help but notice her eyes stayed resolutely on his face.

“Then no apology is needed for my lack of clothing.” He took a step forward, stilled when she tensed. “Would you like me to apologize for kissing you?”

Her nostrils flared, the green of her eyes a soft glow in the night.

How strong was her Fae ancestry? He sensed human blood in her but would have suspected she wasn’t a full-blooded Fae if for no other reason than the deft, easy way she’d killed the body a Redcap had worn like a winter coat. The scent of cold iron, now wet with blood, was just one more scent he’d detected in the air. Most Fae couldn’t touch iron, much less use it as a weapon.

“How about instead of an apology, you tell me why you did it.” The words came out flat.

But he sensed the underlying nerves, the lingering heat of her own desire...and something that ran too deep for him to fully comprehend. He thought it might be longing.

“Perhaps I should,” he murmured. “It would be the polite thing to do.”
