Gia scowled. Oh, he’d love that.

Amusement flooded the connection. Then Underhill was gone, another entity replacing the sentient being.

Gia’s shade.

Opening her eyes, Gia faced the spectral form in front of her, a physical manifestation of the being that marked Gia for what she was—a witch able to connect with shadows, Fae souls who had died but weren’t yet able to move on the next plane, bonding instead with a living Fae.

“Oh,” she whispered, astonished all over again at the priceless gift the dragon had given her. Simply because he could.

Arrogant, he might be. But generous as well. He’d had no reason to save Gia’s shade. But he had.

Reaching out a hand, she brushed her fingers against the misty, cool ephemeral one her shade offered. Then, closing her eyes, she lowered her shields and let the shade come back, settling inside her skin, filling the hollow space inside Gia, that emptiness now gone.

Feeling whole once more, she opened her eyes and looked at Sorin. “You’ve a measure of kindness in you. Look for a speck of mercy. She lives in fear for what may happen to her son and she has no power herself to protect him. That’s not an easy life, dragon, nor is it one you or I could ever begin to understand, because we’ve never been powerless.”

For several long moments, he made no response.

Finally, he inclined his head and shifted his attention to Amy. “She’s bought you a second chance to prove your worth, human. Don’t waste it.”
