She came inside and took a seat on the earthen floor on the opposite side where he’d been sitting when he seen her. Returning to his spot, he sank down, legs folded and watched as she pulled one of the roasted rabbits off and tore into it, not concerned with her lack of utensils or even a dish. When her belly grumbled loudly, she shot him a sheepish smile but didn’t apologize, just popped a large chunk of juicy meat into her mouth.

“I see you were honest when you said you’d happily eat something raw.” He narrowed his eyes, taking a harder look at her, taking her overall health in on a deeper level.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, pulling a canteen off a clip affixed to her pack.

He waited until she’d finished drinking before he asked a question of his own. “Are you well? It’s been an age since I’ve...spent time with anybody and you expended a fair amount of magic over the past couple of days.”

She likely thought he hadn’t been aware. But he was an elemental being. No one, even one of the Fae, could use magic anywhere near him without him feeling it.

Her brows went up, a flicker of surprise dancing across her expression, disappearing almost as quickly as it had appeared. Finally, she shrugged. “Not really—at least not for me. It might seem that way but I’ve got access to a fair amount of magic.”

He considered her words, thought about pressing for more, but decided he hadn’t yet earned that much trust. “Alright.”

A dark golden brow rose. “Just like that? Somehow you don’t seem the type to let something go when you want an answer.”

“I’m not.” He gave her a wicked smile. “But I am the type who understands patience.”

Her gaze remained skeptical, but her hunger ended up winning out and she focused on her food once more, not stopping until she’d finished the first rabbit. After only a brief hesitation, she glanced at him. “You sure you don’t want the other one?”

“I’m fine.” He enjoyed watching her, whether he was taking in the taut curve of her ass as she strode down the trail with Wyn’s hand in hers or the way she tore into roasted meat with agile fingers. He’d enjoyed watching her fight, too—she was like a warrior queen, taking down those unworthy to even walk in her footsteps.

Lost in thought, he hadn’t realized how intensely he’d watched her until her eyes met his sometime later. Her cheeks flushed and her eyes glittered. “Sorin.”

“Yes?”

She drew in a shaking breath, released it slowly. “You should know that you’ve got a way of watching me that has me torn between drawing a blade and...” Her words trailed away as her eyes darkened.

“And what, my witchling?”

“Why do you call me that...yours?” She licked her lips, her gaze dropping to his mouth before darting away.

“Because you are.” He rolled to his hands and feet, prowled around the fire until he was mere inches from her.

She’d finished eating in the time he’d been lost staring at her, the bones of the rabbit discarded. Now there was nothing between them and her eyes held his with rapt fascination.

“I think, Gia, you even know the truth of that. Just as you know I’m yours.”
