Amy shrieked and all but tripped over her feet in terror as she backed away. Her eyes wheeled around, clearly searching for something. Or someone.

“Looking for your son?” Sorin gave her a cold smile. “I’m afraid he snuck out to tattle, human.” Tossing a look at the shade who hung paralyzed in the air, agony radiating from her, Sorin’s fury increased. “Release her. Or I won’t keep the promise I just made Gia—you die now.”

Amy turned even paler, although Sorin didn’t realize it was possible to go whiter than bone.

But she proved her mettle yet again, refusing to back down. Shaking her head, Amy said, “You’re not going to kill me. Not if you told Gia you wouldn’t. I’ve seen how you look at her.”

Sorin wasn’t bothered by her observation. He had no doubt he looked at Gia with all the emotions he had never expected to feel again written in his eyes. He would have to work on that, he supposed. Although Gia could more than handle herself, he didn’t want to needlessly cause her problems. But, really, were there any fools stupid or brazen enough to dare threaten the mate of a dragon?

Then he eyed Amy and reevaluated the situation. Yes. There were.

In the span of a heartbeat, he crossed the room and closed his hand around Amy’s neck. Lifting her so she hung several feet in the air, he let his rage show through.

“You are a fool, human. I’ve told you this once. Perhaps more than once. But you haven’t learned your lesson, haven’t learned just how foolish you are. Hear me now and learn, because one more error, one more cruelty, and you will die. I will not tolerate threats to Gia’s life. Any threat to her shade is a threat to Gia. I would happily let someone flay the scales from my hide with a dull rusty knife every day for the rest of my very long existence before I would allow harm to come to her. And you think I will let you bring harm to her companion?”

Amy’s pupils spiked, now so large that only the thinnest rim of watery blue showed around the black. Her breathing accelerated. Recognizing the signs, he dropped her unceremoniously and watched as she crashed hard and went bonelessly to her ass.

A small hemp bag fell from her fingers.

He picked it up.

A jolt of power shot up his arm and he curled his lip. The magic rolled over him, strange and unfamiliar. It stung but fell away harmlessly, like water dripping from his scales. Dangling it by looping one of the silvery strings over his finger, he crouched in front of her and waited until her eyes cleared. “What is this?”

“It’s...” She swallowed, her teeth chattering in fear. After several halting attempts, she stuttered out, “The same basic ingredients from the last spell.”

Sorin dropped it in front of her. “Destroy it. And you better do it the right way without bringing harm to the shade. Otherwise, you will die without ever seeing your son again, without having a chance to tell him good-bye.”

Amy scrabbled away from him, scooting backward until she hit the far wall. “I can’t,” she cried. “I can’t. They have to have something when they get here.”

The rage inside him exploded into an inferno and he rose slowly, the fire inside him heating his veins until they glowed red against his skin.

“They,” he said in a low growl. “Who are they?”
