“Amy.”

Amy didn't so much as look at her. Unwilling to be put off, Gia strode to the other woman and caught to Amy's chin, forcing the other woman to look at her.

“Why? Even after what you've done, I didn't leave you behind.” She stared into the woman’s pale blue eyes and saw the knowledge. They would have killed you.

Amy blinked and looked away. I know.

“I saved you and your son even after everything you have done to me and mine. Why?”

Amy trembled, trying to break free of Gia’s hold, but Gia wouldn’t let her. After a few rough breaths, she broke.

“I don't have a choice,” Amy shouted. “You don't know what they're like. You don't know what they've said they'll do.”

“They...” Gia let Amy go and backed up a couple of steps.

Amy’s face crumpled and she looked around, her gaze falling on Wyn standing in the corner, arms wrapped tightly around his body.

“Baby...”

He flinched and shook his head. “No, mum.”

Amy covered her mouth with her hand and a sob broke free. “You don't know what they're like. I never wanted... I never wanted this.”

She took a step toward her son, her free hand extended.

Wyn cringed away, shoving more fully back against the wall of the cabin. “No, mum. I'm not letting you use me anymore. I'm not going to be the reason you let them hurt people.”

In the back of her mind, Gia was starting to understand, a more complete picture finally coming into view. But right then, it didn't matter.

She went to Sorin and studied the hemp bag closely, first with her eyes and then prodding it with a bit of magic. There was a responding burst of magic, one with an oddly familiar ‘taste’. Sliding Amy an appraising look, she studied the bag anew.

A few more pieces of that puzzle fell into places.

How did I miss this?

But there wasn’t time for it now.

She had to save her shade.

Once she decided it was safe for her to touch the hex bag, she tried to take the small pouch from Sorin. He held tight for moment, clearly not wanting to release it.

She gave him a sharp look and with a sigh, he let it go. She had no doubt that if anything happened to her, Amy was dead. Not that Gia planned on letting anything happen.

Gia was no fool.

She didn't have a death wish. No, she felt more alive now than she ever had. Despite the fury and frustration swimming through her, despite the confusing morass of emotion swimming through her, she wanted to live and discover the destiny meant for her and the intoxicating, intriguing stranger with golden eyes that burned with such seductive fire.

From the moment she’d seen him, she’d felt it. In her cold, empty heart, so long consumed with loneliness and a need for revenge, she’d felt this tug...this need for him.

The bond with him was new, but it didn’t feel that way.

Now she felt something else—a wrenching, cold fear. And it came from Sorin. He was twisted apart with fear for her.

Reaching up, she cupped his cheek. “Have a bit of faith in me, dragon.”

“How could I not, witchling?” His golden-tipped lashes drooped and he lowered his head.

Rising on her toes, she pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
