She made a humming sound and handed me the phone. “Hey, Dad,” I quietly greeted.

“We figured this would happen,” Dad grumbled, not sounding anywhere near as pissed as I had expected. “While you’re home, you’ll still be grounded. Don’t expect anything fun.”

“I won’t,” I told him. Dad had learned a long time ago that the same parenting techniques he’d used with Trent didn’t work with me. I didn’t really like hanging out with people, and I didn’t like going out.

I liked solitude, and I liked to do things that allowed me that solitude. So, Dad took those things away from me.

I handed the phone back to my aunt and looked over at Seth. She hung up the phone after talking to my dad a minute more and then called Seth’s parents.

Seth looked over at me, his jaw clenched, his eyes completely blank, not letting me read him. “What’s wrong?” I asked him quietly.

He just looked away from me, not supplying me with any kind of answer. A bad feeling settled in the pit of my gut. Why did I feel like suspending Seth was about to do more harm than good?
