FOURTEEN

Bailey

It was like Seth and I had never spoken to each other before.

He had gotten his seat changed in our first-period class. He never cast me another glance in the hallways. In fact, he was always too busy shoving his tongue down some other bitch’s throat to look at me.

And today was senior day, which meant no classes for seniors. Instead, we all got to spend time out on the football field and in the bleachers while parents volunteered with food and drinks. I knew Trent would be here today, which was a welcome blessing. He always volunteered for shit like this when I was involved.

But first, everyone had to meet in their first-period classes before they could be dismissed. They wanted all of the other students out of the halls before releasing all of us seniors. There was less risk of a student sneaking out of class to join us.

I stared at the front of the room, waiting for the announcement to ring out. Aunt Carla came into the classroom with a new kid at her side.

He had black hair with sea-green eyes that were bright and entrancing. He was wearing an ACDC band tee with a pair of low-ride jeans and a pair of expensive high tops on his feet. A leather jacket was draped over his arm.

“Everyone, this is Jacob Thames. He’s new today. I expect everyone to help him as much as they can, especially since his first day is going to be pretty chaotic.” She gestured to the empty seat next to me. “Jacob, you can take a seat next to Bailey.”

Without a word, he came over and put his stuff beside the desk before he dropped into it. He leaned forward, grinning when he finally caught my eyes. “Jacob,” he introduced himself.

“I know,” I grumbled.

He frowned. “I don’t know who fucked up, but they’re dicks, and you don’t need to give them the satisfaction of seeing your sadness,” he quietly said.

I swallowed thickly, looking over at him. He flashed me a smile. “Don’t worry; I’m not hitting on you,” he laughed. “I’m gay. Not even slightly interested in pussy.”

I laughed. I couldn’t help it. He grinned. “We’re going to be good friends, Bailey.”

The announcement came over the speakers, and he stood up, grabbing my hand in his to help me up as well. He didn’t release it as he led me out of the classroom.

Feeling someone staring holes into my back, I looked over my shoulder and caught Seth’s eye. He glared at the hand that was encased in Jacob’s before raising his angry eyes to meet mine.

I just smirked and waved at him over my shoulder before turning back around, my heart squeezing painfully in my chest. Pain laced through my heart. My stomach churned.

I hated that this shit hurt so much.

“First things first, I want a fucking soda,” Jacob told me.

I laughed. “You’re in luck. My brother is volunteering today, and I know he’ll have all of the best ones.”

When we got to Trent’s table, he instantly handed me my favorite grape-flavored soda before holding his hand out to Jacob. “Trent Donovan, Bailey’s older brother.”

Jacob shook his hand. “Jacob Thames. Strictly dickly.”

Trent burst into laughter. “Good. Won’t have to worry about you hitting on my sister.” Trent handed me a bag of chips. “Make sure you eat, sis. You skipped breakfast again this morning.”

I frowned. “I’m not hungry,” I grumbled. “I can’t stomach anything before noon.”

Trent narrowed his eyes at me. “Try,” he ordered. “Not just you anymore, little sis,” he quietly reminded me.

“You’re pregnant?” James asked, his voice low so no one else would overhear.

I swallowed thickly, nodding my head. Seth walked up to the table next to ours. Jacob followed my gaze, gritting his teeth. “What a douche,” he muttered.

Trent grinned. “I fucking like you, kid.” My brother looked at me. “Keep him around, sis.”

I rolled my eyes, leading Jacob away. He grinned down at me as he threw his arm around my shoulder, leading me over to the bleachers. “Is there any chance at all that your brother might be the slightest bit gay?”

I laughed. “No,” I told him.
