I had a feeling this date was about to be a dull one, but if anything, it might serve as a distraction.

God knew I needed a distraction.

* * *

I was right.The date was bland, but at the least the food was decent. What little bit of it I could eat, anyway.

Brayden had a bad habit of talking about himself, all of his achievements, and his goals. But in a way, I was glad he wasn’t asking me those things because I wasn’t sure what I wanted anymore. I could barely get myself to look five minutes ahead into the future.

And I was sure “be normal” wasn’t the kind of answer Brayden would be looking for. He dealt with enough patients like me on a daily basis. I doubted he wanted to be dating someone fucked up as well.

Then again, he did ask me out in front of a fucking therapy office.

I set my fork down and sipped at my water, looking out the large window next to us. It was dark out now, and the lights of the town were lighting up the night sky.

It would be soothing if all of these people weren’t around.

“You’re awfully quiet,” Brayden suddenly said.

I looked back at him and set my cup down. “I’m just a quiet person,” I lied. Truth was, before my catastrophic relationship with Seth, I was actually a fun person to be around. Granted, I hadn’t been as outgoing as Gemma, but I talked to people. Hence my bold move to make a deal with Seth.

He broke me in more ways than one.

And yet, like a fucking dumbass, I still craved him.

I was a special kind of fucked up.

Brayden smiled at me. “I’ll break you out of that shell.” I wanted to scoff. With his “all-about-me” attitude, I highly doubted that. “Come on. Bill is paid for. I’ll give you a lift home.”

I would hope so considering he had driven me out here.

When we got in his car and were driving out of town, heading back towards my house, I stared out of the window, the soft music in the car actually slightly comforting.

And, like an idiot, I wondered if Seth was staring out into the same dark sky that I was.
