“Maybe we should consult a healer? We don’t have one in our pack at the moment.” Blake sounded saddened.

“Oh! Dakota’s dad is the pack healer for their pack. I mean, sleuth, that’s what bears call a group, isn’t it? I could ask Dakota for his number and we could speak to him.” Why hadn’t I thought about that sooner?

“It might be an idea to get a second opinion from a doctor who actually understands shifter healing and omegas.” Blake said carefully.

“Good point. I don’t think the human doctor liked me much and Dakota’s omega parent is male, so his dad should know that bit more.”

“It’s too early to call now. Why don’t we have a nap and then you can call your boss. You needed to call him anyway about taking a couple of days off.”

“You have the best ideas.”

Together we slept until late morning, past the time that I should have been at work. Though, strangely, I didn’t have any messages on my phone or missed calls. I let Blake sleep on and carefully made my way to the kitchen where Axel was sitting, drinking coffee and playing about with his phone.

“Hey, Kade. I hope you don’t mind that I helped myself to coffee and breakfast.”

“No, not at all.” I flushed. “I hope we didn’t disturb you at all.”

“The ward worked a treat. I mean, I heard you two in the bath, but you weren’t doing anything to be embarrassed about.” He rubbed the back of his neck the way I’d seen Blake do a couple of times. It was endearing how much the brothers were alike. “Are you going to call your boss?”

“Yeah, I was just going to get some coffee first and then work my way up to it. It’s likely that he and everyone else are pissed about yesterday. I was a bit of a dick to more than a few people.”

“So you’ll apologize. You don’t act like that a lot, right?”

“Never! I swear it was just the bond wearing out that had me acting off.”

“Well then, it’ll be fine. I’m going to go get my emergency bag out of the car, wake my brother, and have a shower. Is that okay?”

“I’ll wake Blake after my call if that’s okay?”

“Sure thing.” Axel drained the last of his coffee and set his mug next to the sink before heading outside, and I pulled up Dakota’s contact on my phone. Time to face the music.

“Hey, Kade. Everything okay?” While Dakota sounded concerned, he didn’t seem too worried about me and was definitely not angry. I wasn’t sure I’d ever understand him.

“Oh, um, I was just calling because I think I came back to work too soon and might take some time off until this bond is more stable —”

“Sure thing, I actually didn’t expect you in for a couple of days, but we can play it by ear.”

“I also need to apologize to everyone.”

“Kade, everyone knows about Blake and your bond since the whole place is filled with gossips. I can smooth things over if you think it needs it, but the ogres are fine. In fact, Taylor came to ask about you this morning. Safe to say that they’ve forgiven you.”

“Oh.” That made me feel marginally better. Then I remembered the reason for my call. “Kota, do you think your dad, Aldrin, would answer some health questions for me? I wanted to get a second opinion.”

“Uh, yeah, I think he’d do that. Or Papa will make him. I’ll send you his number, okay?”

“Thanks, Kota.”

“Listen, I’ve got to get back to work. Take a few more days, but stay in touch, alright? Between Blake and Axel looking after you, I know you’re in excellent hands.”

“Okay,” I murmured, and the call disconnected. A text came in soon after with the number for Aldrin, the healer for Dakota’s smaller pack, or sleuth. I never asked him which he preferred. Axel came back inside and headed for a shower after checking in on me. Without delaying, I made the call.

The phone rang only twice before someone picked up. “Hello, Kade. Dakota said you’d be calling.” The voice sounded familiar, and I realized it was James, Dakota’s Papa that had answered. “I’m just going to get my mate for you.” I heard the phone transfer hands. My hearing felt more acute than it had been only the day before. Another sign that my wolf was waking.

“Hello, Kade. James was just telling me that you are calling for a second opinion on your diagnosis.” Aldrin’s smooth voice filled the line.

“Uh, yes, please. I just worry that the doctor might have missed something. He, uh... wasn’t very sympathetic.”

“Yes, these human doctors often mean well, but they have no actual idea about the intricacies of shifter healing or what our systems can recover from. Would you mind us visiting you at home? You are welcome to visit the clinic, but I think James wants to bring you some meals.” I heard a noise in the background and a rumble of laughter. “I hope you have room in your freezer because he’s been stress batch cooking since the full moon run.”
